What Payton really meant to say is....
You play the starters until it looks like San Fran is killing the Rams. Once the game isn't in doubt, you pull your defensive starters. When it looks like Brees has the record locked up and San Fran has the game locked up, you pull all offensive starters because there is nothing left to play for. |

If he plays them for the sole reason of ensuring Brees keeps the record he is brain dead. You don't jeprodize the health of your team for a record. I do think that statement was the authors opinion, but that would be dumb if he did leave Brees and the starters in for the sake of the record. The only reason Payton should keep the starters in is if the SF/Rams game is close. If SF is ahead by two scores or more by the half you rest your starters after the half. You play to win otherwise.
