Thanks for the help in trying to enlighten those who aren't.

To summarize what I was tying to illustrate with the stats. Since the loss to the Rams the Saints have been effectively the best offense to ever play the game, period. Pass, run it doesn't matter. The only team that can stop the Saint's offense is the Saints. We play our game, we win.

True, the 49ers have a good D. Good....not great. Great defenses dominate the run and the pass. Great defenses don' t have a pass defense ranked in the middle of the pack of NFL teams.

People forget that our offensive line was in a state of flux early in the year. Since our O-line has gelled Brees has had time to read War and Peace in the pocket and the O is putting up huge numbers.

Unless the 49ers can solve the riddle of where's Drew Candlestick Park can really turn off the lights because the party will be over.

Its no problem, everyone helped, most understood what you were trying to show, and that you were not trying to put the SF defense down. Just a comparison of the teams their defenses faced. So we could understand that SF has a good defense, but they also did not play against quality offenses. You did really good work.

The best offense ever might have to be looked into, because I don't think it is the 2000 Rams, its probably the 2007 Patriots, and they have 4 TD's more than us, but I would be interested on what you think about that.

But I agree, one of the best offenses, ever in the NFL is coming to CSP, and they are not the 85 bears defense. Really good job, I looked your work over and your dead on.

Oh, darn, looks like everybody's tired now. OK. Well, that was fun!!

I say we save our energy for Saturday. I'm excited.

It sure was quiet last year on the bus home from CandleStick.

I think that dam1953 presented a very compelling case in the first post of this thread, and although I don't personally give much emphasis on the schedules teams have, I have to say those stats do make me view the SF defense in a slightly different way.

In any case their defense is really good and going on by what I've seen in the SF games I've seen this season - they have really good pursuit to the ball and they really have the art of gang tackling down. Their LBs are excellent and Rogers seems like a completely different CB than he was in WAS, and their defensive front ain't too shabby either.

Still I believe the Saints will win this game, and it'll be interesting seeing the two "turncoats" face each other as probable starters on either side - Goodwin & Franklin.

I looked at the stats for the 2007 Pats. They were obviously a great passing team and put up a ton of points. That's about the only record the Saints didn't break this year. Brady was a passing machine, much like Brees, but he lacked the running game of the 2011 Saints. If the 07 Pats had the 11 Saints running attack they Brady would have another ring.

I believe that the Saints O should be considered the best ever because they have no holes. Super star QB, great running backs (multiple), receivers, tight end, O line. And best of all....no egos. Loomis and Payton have put together a group of great players with great character. It's a pleasure being a Saints fan. I have lived in Cincinnati for the past 20 years and have witnessed the antithesis of the Saints' program.

Obviously, the best ever title won't mean anything without a ring in Super Bowl XLVI. So, step two of the trip to Indi happens on Saturday in CSP.

dam1953 01-09-2012 10:59 PM

The key with the stats is the point differential in games against top 10 passing and/or running teams. Though the 49ers ended the season with the same record as the Saints and won the BS tie breaker, their offense only put up 1 point more than the opposing teams. The Saints, by comparison, blistered the opposition with a plus - 157 point spread.

It seams clear that the SF offense won't beat us.

Yeah, but that was at home. I don't think there is any denying we don't do 42 points on the road. and your right their offense inst. great.
Our teams average.
Saints 27.2 away
SF 27.6 home

is basically a wash. SF relays heavily on their run game. Their pass game at home averages 186 yards, its pathetic. Whats interesting to me is our rush defense is very good #9 in the NFL. But they struggle away.

I think he got his ticket punched last night, which is a relief because he was as frustrating as a ball of yarn with no beginning or an end.

Budsdrinker 01-10-2012 08:01 AM

More useless stats. Since Drew Brees has been a Saint he is 4-0 against the 49ers and his numbers are 99-140 for 1139 yards 10 TD's and 1 int.
His numbers at the stick are 59-77 for 590 yards 6 TD's and 0 int.
Take the stats for what it's worth. This will be a great game with the #1 offense against the #4 defense but a defense that is 16th against the pass. So no disrespect against the niners but I feel in my opinion that we will win. Now I'm finished on this thread.

Mark (Halo) is a big LSU fan and I know one thing for sure. Last night was NOT a good night to give him any lip at all.

I'd have no problem with Canton if he stayed on point, but he aways seemed to spin his point after someone blew it away.

He's pretty knowlegable, just stubborn as a damn mule.

Halo 01-10-2012 08:22 AM

Actually I didn't do anything. Mods took matters into their own hands. Canton has gone off the deep end chasing the White Whale before so I totally back the mods up.

Is Canton a frequenter of SaintsTrolls.com?

Seems like I remember that handle from the past when I was on the preschool Saints fan site where the "in crowd" wants to get into a measuring contest without anything to back it up...

I apologize to everyone in this thread. I make no secret about the fact that Canton simply pisses me off.

I don't like him. I don't like his arrogance. I don't like the way he attacks people as too stupid to understand. Everybody here watches football, and anybody can take just about any stat and spin it somehow.

I tend - no, I don't tend, I absolutely poke at Canton because I don't like him, but in my own defense I usually (but not always) wait for him to call or insinuate that someone is stupid because they don't agree with him.

He wasn't always like this, which is sad. If it's just me then you guys will have to forgive me. But I like the fact that, for the most part, people who post here tend to give value to the opinion of others. Generally speaking, we all get along and take ribbing from one another in stride.

LeSean McCoy, Cedric Benson, Marshawn Lynch, Ray Rice, Rashard Mendenhall and Steven Jackson can't really run against anyone?

Other than Marshawn, who was the ONLY RB to do well against us (and his team lost), we've shut everyone we've played down.... including these Pro-Bowl RB's from the last couple years, and All-Pro LeSean McCoy.

No need for an asterisk- just better research and not relying on a couple vague stats or generalizations.

You do know that it is not only about the RBs? There's much more that goes into a running offense than just the guy carrying the ball.

If you've been paying attention, the Saints have been shutting down Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, and Michael Turner. The 49ers have one thing to hang their hat on. The Saints are more well rounded and, this should not be overlooked, they have recent experience winning the Superbowl.

TopCow 01-11-2012 10:13 PM

Most would consider the NYG defense one of the best in the NFL this year. Especially rushing the passer. Saints scored 49 on that defense at mid-season. Statistically, the Giants are ranked ahead of the 49ers in yards allowed, as are three other teams.

So who is your money on ---
1) A team with an offense considered to be one of the best of all time, and a 24th-ranked defense, playing away from home on grass or...
2) A team with, not the best but one of the better defenses in the league this year, and a 24th-ranked offense?

I know who my money's on.
