Vic Fangio, the 49ers' defensive coordinator, wishes that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell had stepped in when the Saints signed free-agent running back Darren Sproles in July.

"I can't believe they got him for the cheap price that they got him for replacing Reggie Bush," Fangio said. "I think if it was the NBA, the commissioner might have stepped in and stopped that move."

The 5-foot-6, 190-pound Sproles mightlook small, but he has been a huge X-factor for the Saints this season. Bush caught 81 passes from Drew Brees the past two years combined before taking his talents to Miami, but Sproles caught 86 this season alone. And he averaged two more yards on those catches (8.3) than Bush did.

Thanks for the support, SloMo. You have earned a Lions supporter in a Fleur de Lis uniform. It is true that the 49ers must stop Sproles. And Drew Brees. And Jimmy Graham. And Pierre Thomas. And Marques Colston. And Chris Ivory. And Devery Henderson. And Jed Collins. And Adrian Arrington. No problem for the finest defensive unit ever to put on uniforms.

I'm hearing all this about stopping our run game. And I would rekon if there's a team that could do that it'd be San Francisco.

But what I'm wondering - and I don't know the answer to this - is how their "D" performs against the screen pass? If they plan on pressuring Drew like people are saying they are, they'd be wise to keep the screen play in mind. PT might just have a career day if they show up single-minded...

Thanks A.J. Smith.
