Probably just an agreement in principle. Cross the T's and dot the I's and we're good to go.

FinSaint 01-19-2012 05:51 PM

They also need a new secondary coach to replace Oden, which isn't a bad thing mind you.

foreverfan 01-19-2012 05:53 PM

It's about time... The defense has been laying on Brees leg for a long time.

I don't know much about Spagnuola, and I'm certainly not trying to be a wet blanket, so I have to take you guys word for it that he was the best choice for the job. I just hope and pray that Spagnuola doesn't turn into a Spaz-ola!

He'll probably bring in his staff from the Rams and his team of coordinators.

I've been saying all week that Spags was the guy I wanted to be our D Coordinator. Living in NY I got to watch his defense with the Giants when they won the Super Bowl and was very impressed. He seems to do an excellent job at putting d-linemen in positions to get after the QB. Very excited about this hire!

Beastmode 01-19-2012 06:07 PM

I think he's the best option available but still...we need good players.

Unless we get a couple of outstanding players I don't see much changing. All those bodies GW sent on blitzes and we seldom got decent pressure.
And why is it they can find gems on the offensive side but not defense.
Maybe it harder on defense...I don't know.

That might be a good thing - at least when it comes to the secondary coaching - because Rams were #7 overall in passing yards allowed while Saints were #30. And I think I remember them having had injuries on their starting secondary.

I think you'd be shocked. A few key players in specific positions may be the difference. Much like losing Fujita and Sharper in 2010 changed the face of our defense A WHOLE LOT!

It might just be that GW just didn't know how to best use their potential, although I doubt that is the only reason.

This has got to be on par with bringing in Sproles last year. I also just read that our DB coach is leaving for JVille. I imagine the "Spagonator" will want to bring in some of his on coaches from the Rams and possibly try and get a few of the Giants players to come over as well. I hear OSI is possibly a free agent this year. Man I never thought I would see the day when coaches and players where kicking in the door to play for the Saints. It is a great time to be a Saints fan and I am going to ride this train until it runs out of steam.

How Steve Spagnuolo fits with Saints

Quote:

This is a big victory for the Saints because I’m pretty sure Spagnuolo is the guy Sean Payton had targeted for this job, probably even before previous coordinator Gregg Williams left for St. Louis and a reunion with Jeff Fisher after the Saints lost in the playoffs.

If you want a picture of a Spagnuolo defense, don’t think too much about the St. Louis team he had been the head coach of since 2009.

Think more of the New York Giants, when Spagnoulo was their defensive coordinator in 2007 and ’08. The Giants won the Super Bowl in the 2007 season. Prior to that, Spagnoulo had a long run as an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles, who played in four NFC Championship Games during his tenure. Spagnuolo worked for the Eagles from 1999 through 2006.

In short, his defense -- in theory -- is a lot like we’ve seen out of the Giants this postseason. It relies on a lot of pressure from the front four and not much blitzing. Spagnuolo prefers tall/angular cornerbacks that can play man-to-man coverage and also likes playmakers at safety.

I want opposing offenses to hear footsteps!

This is going to be the longest offseason EVER...

Donuts32 01-19-2012 07:51 PM

This is very exciting. Can't wait to see what Spags does. The off season and draft may be very interesting this year.

westbankdaze 01-19-2012 08:13 PM

Undefeated. Mark it down. In our house with an awesome DC... It's the only thing that was holding us back.

This our time and it's in our house !!! Bring on the world !!!

QBREES9 01-19-2012 08:19 PM

Man this is Great News !!!!! We got our man ! Thanks Greg Williams for all your help. During the Super Bowl run. Good Luck to you.

Budsdrinker 01-19-2012 08:28 PM

Do you think it's possible to get Del Rio as LB coach or would that be too much of a demotion? Payton and Joe Vitt are close but the LB's aren't setting the world on fire maybe we need a shake up there as well.

W. Kovacs 01-19-2012 08:34 PM

Good, short, read.

I like that Spags seems to have a history of being able to be flexible and pull the best out of the players he has:

Let's take it easy. This a good hire. I do believe he will improve the D.
However the saints will not have the cap room to make many moves this offseason. So he will be playing with the same scrubs GW did. He will improve the D, how much they will improve remains to be seen.

mikesaintfan 01-19-2012 09:17 PM

happy day!~!!!!!!!!!!

SmashMouth 01-19-2012 09:23 PM
