Could be Payton did not want to make a formal announcement until Spags did a full evaluation of the defense. Nothing like a "trial run".

Maybe they just wanted to wait for the season to be officially in the books before announcing this.

Curtis joins the New Orleans staff after serving as defensive backs/safeties coach with the Rams from 2009-11. He came to St. Louis after spending three seasons as a defensive quality control coach with the New York Giants from 2006-08, the final two on the same staff as Spagnuolo. Probably so, there may have been some sort of contractual reason for it, either his old contract or the new one they plan for him and his assistants to sign.

Thats incredible. Its like a LB coach succeeding while being forced to field three Scott Shanles.
