Pretty much everything before 1990 was marching bands. Peformance of note would be in 1980 of George Burns, Mickey Rooney.

I think out side of landing a Big name band they usualy go for broader demographic appeal with a wide list of performers. Country though is left out in the cold(1994,2003) if you don't consider Shania Twain country then only 1994.

1990-Pete Fountain, Doug Kershaw, Irma Thomas,
1991- New Kids on the Block,
1992-Gloria Estefan
1993-Michael Jackson
1994-Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, The Judds
1995-Patti Labelle, Indiana Jones & Marion Ravenwood, Teddy Pendergrass, Tony Bennett, Arturo Sandoval, Miami Sound Machine
1996-Diana Ross
1997-The Blues Brothers (Dan Aykroyd, John Goodman and James Belushi), ZZ Top, James Brown, Catherine Crier
1998-Boyz II Men, Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves, The Temptations, Queen Latifah, Grambling State University Band
1999-Chaka Khan, Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Savion Glover, Kiss
2000-Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton
2001-Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly
2002-U2
2003-Shania Twain, No Doubt, Sting
2004-Janet Jackson, P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, and Justin Timberlake
2005-Paul McCartney
2006-The Rolling Stones
2007-Prince, Florida A&M University Marching 100 Band
2008-Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
2009-Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2010-The Who
2011-The Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash
2012-Madonna, LMFAO, Cirque du Soleil, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., Cee Lo Green

I wouldn't mind those but the media would be left scratching their heads.

Well, I'm for getting performers with some local ties such as Jimmy Buffet, Harry Connick Jr, Dr. John, Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas. Put some New Orleans flavor in it since we will be playing in it.

Yeah, I agree ... when the SuperBowl is being put on by a host city like New Orleans, there's a lot of local flavour that would make for an entertaining halftime show ... Indianapolis, not so much, hire a big-name act when the SuperBowl is hosted by a city like Indy with little culture ... a Mardi Gras theme would be cool with a big parade, costumes, dancers ... it's probably been done before, but why not stay with a good thing?

There honestly isn't anything more boring on television than marching bands at halftime.

Should be a celebration of New Orleans music then the last act should be the Ying Yang Twins since we will be in the SB.
