Potential Super Bowl halftime acts?
|
Metallica, AC/DC, would be cool and different than the past selections.
|
Its gotta be a band that appeals to millions of middle aged viewers and attendees.
Metallica or AC/DC would be a horrible decision. |

I will say as much as I like Metallica and love me some AC/DC I am not sure it would be a good halftime show. I would enjoy it, but I am not sure I fit the traditional middle age demographic.

From that list my choice would be the Foo Fighters, I might even watch the halftime show for once if they were performing.

Pretty much everything before 1990 was marching bands. Peformance of note would be in 1980 of George Burns, Mickey Rooney.
I think out side of landing a Big name band they usualy go for broader demographic appeal with a wide list of performers. Country though is left out in the cold(1994,2003) if you don't consider Shania Twain country then only 1994. 1990-Pete Fountain, Doug Kershaw, Irma Thomas, 1991- New Kids on the Block, 1992-Gloria Estefan 1993-Michael Jackson 1994-Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, The Judds 1995-Patti Labelle, Indiana Jones & Marion Ravenwood, Teddy Pendergrass, Tony Bennett, Arturo Sandoval, Miami Sound Machine 1996-Diana Ross 1997-The Blues Brothers (Dan Aykroyd, John Goodman and James Belushi), ZZ Top, James Brown, Catherine Crier 1998-Boyz II Men, Smokey Robinson, Martha Reeves, The Temptations, Queen Latifah, Grambling State University Band 1999-Chaka Khan, Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Savion Glover, Kiss 2000-Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton 2001-Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly 2002-U2 2003-Shania Twain, No Doubt, Sting 2004-Janet Jackson, P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, and Justin Timberlake 2005-Paul McCartney 2006-The Rolling Stones 2007-Prince, Florida A&M University Marching 100 Band 2008-Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers 2009-Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band 2010-The Who 2011-The Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash 2012-Madonna, LMFAO, Cirque du Soleil, Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., Cee Lo Green |
Chemical Brothers and Crystal Method could work ... maybe even a little Smashmouth.... lol

I wouldn't mind those but the media would be left scratching their heads. |
Well, I'm for getting performers with some local ties such as Jimmy Buffet, Harry Connick Jr, Dr. John, Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas. Put some New Orleans flavor in it since we will be playing in it.

There honestly isn't anything more boring on television than marching bands at halftime.
|
Should be a celebration of New Orleans music then the last act should be the Ying Yang Twins since we will be in the SB.
|
The answer to this question is sooooooo simple:
The question: Who should perform at halftime at the next super bowl? The obvious answer: Van mother ****ing Halen. Eddie and Diamond Dave and Alex are at the top of their game. People have been DYING for it to happen, and "A Different Kind of Truth" does not disappoint. It's the right band at the right time and is precisely targeted to the Super Bowl demographic. Oh, and Wolfie is no Anthony, but he doesn't suck, and he's Valerie's son after all, so, I mean...how could it NOT be Van Halen? You're welcome... |
Coldplay gets it I will not watch the SB unless Saints are in.
Coldplay is the most over-rated GARBAGE. I rather any of the others over this crap... |

When I was reading this I thought for sure you were going to say Zooey, but instead you went with the disappointing Van Halen. :cry2: Even Zooey is sad because of it... http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_hYyttNKCrP...400/cute.9.jpg |

So, of course Zooey was my first thought, but even I have to admit that She and Him just aren't big enough yet for the Super Bowl halftime. In a perfect world Zooey sings the National Anthem and Van Halen rocks half time. Oh, and the Saints win the game 49-3. :bng: |

OK. I stand corrected, but still up in arms against Van Halen. :-D |

Zooey digs VH. |
OK. I've just never liked them, I've type cast them into the same garbage bin as f.e. Def Leppard, and that is one bin which contents should never be recycled.
Again, just my opinion, and I never watch the halftime show, so it's all the same to me who they have performing. But if it was Zooey and her ukulele I might watch... |
Anyone who pimps Van Halen after "Women and Children First" is a music moron.

I second this, they suck |

Def Leppard is "A" Ball. Van Halen is in a completely different league. Without Mutt Lange Def Leppard is just something that happened in the 80's that a few people can remember. Van Halen is almost (and in some cases IS) genre-defining. Revolutionary? Outside of Eddie probably not. But dude, there's an edge to what they do (and I'm talking about with Roth) that legitimizes their music, even when David is show-boating. LOL |
Most years I'd be thrilled for Metallica or AC/DC but since its being hosted in one of the most musically talented cities in the world, the NFL or who ever books the garbage that is known as the Half time show needs to get local talent plus add Southern and/or Grambling somehow

I was only 1 when that came out, so maybe I'm not the right demographic for their music. That type of "power rock" or whatever its categorized as that Van Halen represents has never struck a chord with me - and as a side note I can further alienate people by saying that AC/DC sucks balls too. Metallica would be OK if they only did songs from Justice/Puppets era. |

But tell me...can you dig this: |

I'm pretty open to various musical genres in general, but there are some that don't really light a spark in me. EV is a great guitarist and he has probably had a huge influence on many musicians who I think are great, so I would never in a million years bash him or his music. That clip from the show was ok. I mean I wouldn't listen to it again, but I got through it without any ear bleeding. That's just too layed back, but not layed back enough... I know it doesn't make much sense, but that probably best describes my feelings towards that particular musical piece. It just doesn't raise any feelings one way or the other in me. And I'm not just into heavier music... I listen to a lot of electronic, drum 'n bass, rock, indie, punk rock, and classical music, for example. Basically, anything that is dark and depressing hits home with my Finnish personality, which is why I guess I love me some Johnny Cash. |
I'd like to see a band that can play it all, spanning the history of R&R...
From Elvis to Zepplin to Van Halen to REM to Nirvana to whatever crap you P****Y's listen to post grunge era... |

Oh, that's Eddie's dad on the clarinet. :-D |

I like Metallica - most of their stuff. It's not hacked. But there is no comparison of Metallica and Van Halen. Van Halen was classified as "hard rock" early on, but I don't think that's accurate. Van Halen is its own thing, in much the same way that Metallica is its own thing, and that they are each their own thing is precisely why I like them as much as I do. Van Halen strikes a note with me. There aren't many bands that I really attach myself to like I have Van Halen. Let's see....hmmm...The Eagles...Ummm...Paul Simon...uhmmm...Led Zeppelin...uhhhh...Rush...maybe U2. I also really liked Tears for Fears and The Outfield and A-Ha and it took me a long time to really 'get' the Beatles, but I get it now. I dig Nirvana, but it wasn't until Cobain died that I got into them really. I'm sure there are others but not many. In the end, I like lots of stuff and I can at least appreciate the stuff I don't like so long as it's got something artistic going for it and so long as the people performing it aren't completely devoid of talent. Still, Van Halen is the ideal choice for a Super Bowl half time show. Frankly I'm surprised that they haven't been invited already. Maybe the NFL was just being smart and waiting for The brothers and David to make up. |
I agree that VH would probably be a good choice for the venue and its target audience, but I'd still prefer a more NOLA approach like was already suggested in this thread.
Your listing of bands doesn't really call out to me, I listened to the Eagles when I was a lot younger around 10-12 and didn't even understand what the songs were about. Nirvana maybe comes the closest, but I never really got on their wagon before or after Mr. Cobain's demise. They have few song I like, but only one I really like: |
Ok, I'm thinking something a little more...well...tame, I guess. Because I'm thinking a good entertaining country artist. We need to bring a little class back to the halftime show. Maybe Toby Keith. Or if you still want the old rock and roll guys, maybe Huey Lewis. But if you put a heavy metal band on at halftime, you'll have people jumping out of windows before the start of the second half.
