It's in Brees' best interest to sign the deal rather than take a pay cut for the tag. It's in the Saints' best interest to keep him. They will work it out. Brees wants to retire a Saint. This is probably his last contract and he knows it. The Saints ain't **** without Drew and they know it. It'll get done this weekend when one party gives. The tag will be used on a player that the Saints want to retain (not named Drew) and it will get done. Besides, I dreamed of this day a year or so ago I think. Saturday is the day. Yeah...20 Mill 5 years I think it was. |

Article:Brees rejected contract offer in 2011
Saints quarterback Drew Brees rejected a contract offer from the club last year that would have made him the highest paid player in the NFL, according to a report published Friday at CBS Sports.com.
The report, citing an unidentified league source, is the first to say the money New Orleans offered Brees would have made him the league's highest paid player, but The Times-Picayune has confirmed a contract was offered to Brees and he rejected it. I don't mind the money, but the front loaded part is pretty disconcerting because the Saints can't really afford that right now... after 2014 for sure, but 2012 and 2013 are still going to be under the lower salary cap.

Report: Saints offered Brees NFL's richest deal; QB declined
Report: Saints offered Brees NFL's richest deal; QB declined
As the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees continue talks on a long-term deal that have left the quarterback frustrated, general manager Mickey Loomis has refuted a report he doesn't believe the four-time All-Pro is a great player. The size of the team's reported contract offer would seem to reflect as much. A league source told CBS Sports that Brees and his agent, Tom Condon, turned down an offer that would have made the six-time Pro Bowl pick the highest-paid player in the NFL. The report surfaced a day after three sources told Yahoo! Sports that Loomis, who has led the team's negotiations, recently characterized Brees as "very good" in response to the quarterback being called "great." Loomis responded to the report Friday, saying it didn't hold credence. He told the New Orleans Times-Picayune it was "ridiculous" to believe he doesn't think of Brees as a great player, and although he wouldn't go into specifics about a contract, added that the team appreciates Brees' greatness. "We're trying to pay him accordingly," Loomis told the newspaper. "I have always thought of Drew as a great player," he added. "Always. Even when his shoulder was damaged. That's why we wanted him." Sources with knowledge of the situation told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora that Brees has grown frustrated with the negotiations, and the Saints will use the franchise tag on him if a long-term deal can't be reached. The deadline for teams to use the franchise tag is March 5. The franchise-tag value for quarterbacks is expected to be about $14.4 million. Reports have suggested the Saints would like to avoid using the tag on Brees, given it could hinder their ability to retain two other key players set to hit free agency -- wide receiver Marques Colston and guard Carl Nicks. Brees, who led the Saints to their only Super Bowl title in the 2009 season, threw for an NFL-record 5,476 yards and 46 touchdowns last season and was voted the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. Maybe Drew is looking for some hush money. I truly hope that is not the case. I'm wondering what Spanola is thinking right now. I wonder what Drew & Payton are thinking right now. What a delima this is and with hosting the superbowl in 2013, what kind of impact will this have on the city, fans & the team. So much for being a classy organization.

Yeah BUT...just as we have just been made aware of this bs, this crap has been happening forever. I highly doubt this will be something new to Spags. I wouldn't worry much about that. The media is making this out to be worse than it really is.

This smells of Gregg Williams' revenge. "Gregg Williams has issued a public apology for organizing a system with the New Orleans Saints that paid bounties to defensive players for big hits on opponents and big plays." Give me an f-ing break. Williams has never felt sorry for a damn thing in his life. So he admits to organizing it, he better damn well suffer the stiffest penalty. Period.
