If you read the previous statements from him and now he is happy...he can kiss it!

Sorry QBREES9

Each side; Drew's side and Saints Side; have until July the 14th to negotiate a change in the deal. So really the situation still isn't dead.

Drew,

I understand you want to get "PAID" but this is rediculous. You were given an offer to make you the highest paid player in the NFL yet you turned it down. You boast about how much you love this team, the city and the fans. Well, prove it.

breesfan27 03-03-2012 04:30 PM

I said this on twitter, but I'll say it here too. Anybody else think all this **** with the Saints is the NFL's way of making sure we don't play the SB in our house?

Hey Loomis, PAY MY (fake) HUSBAND, *******! *vent*

THANK YOU!

I know you're all upset, but some of y'all need to chill the eff out. Without Brees, this team would not be nearly as successful as they are now. Not giving him all of the credit, but what did we have before him? Aaron F**king Brooks? GMAFB.

Yup your right !

Marlboro Man 03-03-2012 04:43 PM

Brees is a class act. You think he wants to be associated with this BS going on now with the Bounty thing? Maybe he doesn't even WANT to stay here no matter how much money they offer him. Maybe he doesn't play for the franchise money just like he said he wouldn't. Can't blame him either. He's been betrayed by Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis. This has got to be the worst day in Saints HISTORY!

onebyone 03-03-2012 04:46 PM

Brees is definitely without a doubt one of the best things that ever happened to us, but likewise, we were definitely one of the best things that ever happened to him too. There's really no excuse for this not getting worked out.

I am depressed.

Saintlyone 03-03-2012 04:47 PM

Complete BS. GO AWAY LOOMIS!!!!!!!! This isn't some player that might be good......HE'S DREW FRIGGIN BREES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No.

hitta 03-03-2012 04:48 PM

We restructured Will Smith's contract. We could end up restructuring more contracts. I think Loomis has a plan of action for resigning Nicks and Colston, and I think we should let this play out before we start panicking.

AsylumGuido 03-03-2012 04:53 PM

Will y'all frickin' chill out? This is no big deal. All this does is buy time to work out a deal with Brees later. What it actually did was good for us. The $14-15 million cap hit from the tag is almost $10 less than what Condon was demanding. If Loomis had caved into Condon then there would be no way in hell of signing either Colston or Nicks. Now there is a decent chance to sign one, if not both of them.

This isn't a "nightmare" nor is it the "worst day in Saints history". It is simply business.

:whatever:

Thank you for a bit of sanity. Geez!

Danno 03-03-2012 05:02 PM

If Drew turns into the interception machine he was in 2010, he's gonna lose a boatload of money.

Without Nicks and Colston, I can definitely see this happening.

He may be millions cheaper next year.

And btw, the title of this post should be..

"WE TAGGED HIM!!!"

Style 03-03-2012 05:10 PM

Besides Drew is really not that good. It is the system. He is an above average QB and would play like that in another system. In this system he is elite. If we get an average QB in this system he would be an above average QB.

Harsh but true.

I also am enjoying watching people flip over this.
It's business. I have faith Drew will be a Saint, I have faith Loomis will make the right decisions. I have faith we'll be a better team next year.

This franchise tag isn't the end of the world people.

hitta is right.........so is AsylumGuido. Too many knee jerk reactions. "What we have here is a failure to communicate."
Things aren't playing out like we thought, but we've got to remember Drew has another child on the way. He may really want to play for less but feels obligated to his family and their security.
There may still be method to this madness. Drew isn't going anywhere(he'd better stay healthy). Let's step back and believe.

Drew has another child on the way and wants more money for the security of his family...ok sooo the millions he is making now isn't enough?

60 mil to be exact. Not counting god only knows how much from endorsements.

jnormand 03-03-2012 05:19 PM

I don't have any ill feelings toward Brees. I just wish they would have come to terms. It'll still get done. Sucks we had to use the tag on Drew. This is business.

Euphoria 03-03-2012 05:20 PM

Well I predict this is Drew's last good year at best... its all down hill for him after this.

He had a chance to make 5-7, million this year alone. I don't see Drew being a Saint next year. This is the first dumb move by Drew Bree's. And the start to the end.

Time to move on and start rebuilding after this year. Its an all or nothing year, and we are off to a freakin' great start aren't we!

Its an all or nothing year and Drew has now have incentive to win a SB this year and really cash in next year... if he doesn't then we are parting ways and let the rebuild begin.

When you sign a deal with a high powered agent like Condon you agree to let him handle everything that has to do with contract negotiations. This is exactly what Condon was trying to get. He obviously high-balled the Saints with his demands hoping that the Saints would tag Brees so his other client, Carl Nicks, would avoid the tag and be able to hit the open market.

I hope that my sarcasm was evident. Somebody recently brought up the "Pay the man" fans and how silly that statement sounds.

But how did Condon get what he wanted? It seems that Condon wanted a contract for Brees that was bigger than Manings. Most players hate the Franchise Tag and in Brees case, he'll be making a lot less. And he's no spring chicken. That's a lot of uncertainty.

hitta 03-03-2012 06:21 PM

I know there are no official salary cap reports, but is there anywhere to look at the Saints detailed cap figures? I want to see approximately what we have to work with and what needs done.

Condon represents both Brees AND Nicks. He knew that if a deal was made with Brees before the deadline that the Saints would tag Nicks. He made sure that wouldn't happen by demanding far more than he knew was reasonable. He also knows that he still has until July 18th to work a long term deal for Brees. Brees will still get his money and Nicks gets to hit the market, thus making Mr. Condon's pockets just that much fuller.

FinSaint 03-03-2012 06:35 PM

Well, I have to admit that I'm shocked they couldn't come to terms and avoid the tag, although I'm not sure if the impending Bountygate had anything to do with this decision.

I would've rather seen them just put the tag on Nicks and put Brees on the spot and see if he really wanted to be a Saint or if it was all just a business strategy and lip service.

This is not really as bad as many of us are perceiving the situation as - yet - but it could turn out to be a really difficult situation come free agency.

I just feel so disappointed... http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Sad/sad-012.gif

iceshack149 03-03-2012 06:40 PM

It seemed like a "screw you" from Loomis but like everyone else here, I have no idea what's going on.

Last offseason seemed terribly long with the lockout. This offseason may seem longer.

It seems like that might be a big factor. From where I sit, it seems like the Saints are scrambling to get things taken care of before the League takes it away from them.

Report: Saints Place Franchise Tag On Quarterback Drew Brees
DREW BREES, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS, NFL | COMMENTS

After trying and failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints have decided to retain the quarterback next season under the franchise tag, according to ESPN.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday that Brees and the Saints remained millions of dollars apart in contract talks; Brees is rumored to be seeking an offer of $23 million per season in the first three years, a la Peyton Manning. Rather than risk letting him walk in free agency to find said offer, the Saints tagged Brees today.

Brees has thrown for 40,742 yards and 281 touchdowns in his eight-year NFL career; he’s spent the last six years in New Orleans, earning $60 million. He set an NFL single-season record last season with 5,476 yards passing.

------------------------------------------

Saints assigned the exclusive-rights franchise tag to QB Drew Brees.

The "exclusive-rights" tag means Brees cannot talk with other teams, and also guarantees roughly $1 million more than the standard franchise tag. The Saints' continued inability to sign Brees to a long-term deal means premier free agent LG Carl Nicks will now almost certainly walk in free agency, while Marques Colston likely won't be far behind. The Saints still have until July 16 to work out a long-term accord with their record-breaking quarterback, but recent reports have pegged the two sides as much as $5 million a year apart. With talks moving at a snail's pace since last August, there's little reason to believe a breakthrough is on the horizon.

Euphoria 03-03-2012 09:25 PM

Actually the more I think about this the more I think this is a real smart move by Loomis. Tagging Brees he'll get something like 14 to 17 million saving a lot money.

I don't think Bree's makes it past 2 years. We have a savings of 12 to 19 million on base pay alone.

If they can't re-sign Nicks or find a suitable replacement for him, it might very well be that Brees will spend the majority of next season looking up to the heavens.

Jamessr 03-03-2012 09:42 PM

Come one.... there are 31 other teams that didn't have Carl Nicks and "some" done well.
It's not the end of the world
