this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I know there are no official salary cap reports, but is there anywhere to look at the Saints detailed cap figures? I want to see approximately what we have to work with and what needs done....

Brees will still get his money and Nicks gets to hit the market, thus making Mr. Condon's pockets just that much fuller.

Well, I have to admit that I'm shocked they couldn't come to terms and avoid the tag, although I'm not sure if the impending Bountygate had anything to do with this decision.
I would've rather seen them just put the tag on Nicks and put Brees on the spot and see if he really wanted to be a Saint or if it was all just a business strategy and lip service. This is not really as bad as many of us are perceiving the situation as - yet - but it could turn out to be a really difficult situation come free agency. I just feel so disappointed... |

DREW BREES, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS, NFL
Report: Saints Place Franchise Tag On Quarterback Drew Brees
DREW BREES, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS, NFL | COMMENTS After trying and failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints have decided to retain the quarterback next season under the franchise tag, according to ESPN. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Friday that Brees and the Saints remained millions of dollars apart in contract talks; Brees is rumored to be seeking an offer of $23 million per season in the first three years, a la Peyton Manning. Rather than risk letting him walk in free agency to find said offer, the Saints tagged Brees today. Brees has thrown for 40,742 yards and 281 touchdowns in his eight-year NFL career; he’s spent the last six years in New Orleans, earning $60 million. He set an NFL single-season record last season with 5,476 yards passing. ------------------------------------------ Saints assigned the exclusive-rights franchise tag to QB Drew Brees. The "exclusive-rights" tag means Brees cannot talk with other teams, and also guarantees roughly $1 million more than the standard franchise tag. The Saints' continued inability to sign Brees to a long-term deal means premier free agent LG Carl Nicks will now almost certainly walk in free agency, while Marques Colston likely won't be far behind. The Saints still have until July 16 to work out a long-term accord with their record-breaking quarterback, but recent reports have pegged the two sides as much as $5 million a year apart. With talks moving at a snail's pace since last August, there's little reason to believe a breakthrough is on the horizon. Source: Jay Glazer on Twitter Mar 3 - 3:39 PM |

Actually the more I think about this the more I think this is a real smart move by Loomis. Tagging Brees he'll get something like 14 to 17 million saving a lot money.
I don't think Bree's makes it past 2 years. We have a savings of 12 to 19 million on base pay alone. |

Come one.... there are 31 other teams that didn't have Carl Nicks and "some" done well.
