Cutting Vilma would have taken care of that.

No it wouldn't have.

Vilma will turn 30 in April, and the Saints could save about $3.4 million in cap space by releasing him.

If the Saints have at the moment $3M in cap space and add that $3.4M from cutting Vilma - it's still not enough to take care of Ryans' cap hit.
