Busted but not broken: Sanctions, instability will be difficult for Saints to overcome, but Brees provides hope
METAIRIE, La. -- The NFL hit the Saints with some of the most severe penalties ever levied against any professional sports team Wednesday, and they won’t stop there. Commissioner Roger Goodell said that player penalties will be next on his agenda, and those could wind up being the most costly of all.
The most jaw-dropping news on Wednesday was that the Saints will lose coach Sean Payton for a full year, beginning April 1 – something that no NFL team has ever had to face. After being found guilty of running an illegal bounty program from 2009-2011, the Saints will also forfeit a second-round draft pick in 2012 and 2013. They’ll lose general manager Mickey Loomis for eight games during the 2012 regular season, and they’ll lose linebackers coach/assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games. They could eventually lose veteran defensive leaders like linebacker Jonathan Vilma and others to suspensions. It’s as close to the “death penalty” as any NFL team has ever seen. And yet, it’s not a death penalty. If there is any silver lining for the Saints, it’s that they are one of the organizations best built to absorb such a heavy blow. We are a well built organization and the next man up will rise to the occasion... we need to believe that. Surely the lost of Payton is damaging as well as the lost draft picks, but we'll weather this storm. There's a whole year of Saints football ahead of us and it sure beats a lock out. ![]() |
