Payton, Williams can appeal, but should they? | ProFootballTalk

A question many of you have asked over the past 24 hours relates to the question of whether Saints coach Sean Payton, Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis, Saints assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Vitt, and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams have the ability to appeal the penalties imposed on them as a result of the three-year bounty system maintained by the team.

The easy answer is that they can.

The tougher question is whether they should.

For starters, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells PFT that any appeal will be heard by the Commissioner, pursuant to the NFL’s Constitution and Bylaws. And based on the Commissioner’s attitude as evidenced by his Wednesday media tour, he likely won’t be changing his mind.

More importantly, appealing the punishment doesn’t mesh with the repeated acceptance of “full responsibility” by Williams and, separately, by Payton and Loomis.

After being whacked hard by the league and saying all the right things (after months of lying), any goodwill the men have created will be squandered if they now try to fight the sanctions.

So, yes, they can fight. But any unlikely partial victory they secure via a reduction of the punishment will be outweighed by the style points they’d lose via the perception that they really don’t accept full responsibility.

Payton has about 8 mil reasons to appeal!

I'm no one.

They already did appeal. What the heck do you think Benson and Payton were doing in New York week before last? Don't you figure That was their chance to be heard.

On another note, I wonder if Benson made any request to Goodell to hold off on handing out the punishment, until season ticket purchases had to be made. Wasn't the cut off date to order season tickets recently?

They request a private meeting with him and discuss the situation before deciding what to do

From what is being said the lying and cover up is what did them in.
What can they possibly say at this point.

I realize this may have been worded carefully by the Saints legal department, but does it contain the answer.

From the Saints response:

"Today, Commissioner Goodell apprised us of the severe penalties facing our club, as proposed by the NFL."

Even if an appeal is unsuccessful, it should be pursued by all involved.

The extent of penalties and repercussions now and in the future on ANY team, owner, GM, coach, and player should be reviewed.

It's hard to apologize for years of lies and cover-up, Sean Payton need to just bite it and architect his best damn gameplan he's ever seen in his life together while he has a whole year to observe team's.
