New Orleans Saints Re-Sign K John Kasay

New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced today that the club has re-signed K John Kasay to a one-year contract.

Kasay, 5-10, 210, was originally signed by the Saints during the club’s 2011 preseason, handling field goal and extra point duties for the club. The Athens, Ga. native set franchise records with 147 total points and 63 extra points. Kasay showed the trademark consistency that he has displayed throughout his career by hitting 28-of-34 field goals (82.4%), including a 26-yard game-winner in overtime at Atlanta on November 13.

Wow. I wonder if Hartley could be gone, to free up more money for Brees? Hartley's salary is $700,000, he counts $1.2 million against the cap because of his contract...but if Kasay can come in and kick for league minimum, say, $280,000 or $300,000, that's quite a bit of $$$ freed up for Drew... Not saying that's what IS happening, but it's certainly possible. We'll see. With this new Brees contract, our days of luxury like having two kickers on the roster to switch when one gets hot or cold, those days are almost certainly going to be over.

Saints playing it safe. Keeping Kasay just in case, and as a coach for Hartley. Most likely Kasay got league minimun.

I follow Hartley on Twitter;

League minimum salary is controlled by the CBA and for Kasay, with his tenure, is approximately $925,000 in 2012.

Oh right, veteran minimum, my bad -- I forgot he is almost as old as I am, LOL. In that case I really don't know what this means.

Yeah this is pretty weird. Hartley was signed to a five year contract. As far as being a coach for Hartley, I'm pretty sure John Carney is still working as our kicking consultant. Maybe it's just insurance in case Hartley's not quite up to par yet after the injury and missing the whole season.

Maybe they're keeping him to be our interim coach, while Vitt is suspended.

I'll be sending my resume' to ESPN.

Welcome back to the Saints' single season scoring and XP record holder!

I have to wonder if Hartley's injury is not progressing...

Advice to all sports-minded fathers: have your son start kicking a ball. Now.

42 years old. Single-season points leader. Another contract.

other than middle reliever and backup goalie, not sure of any 40+ pro athletes this side of Jamie Moyer
