Benson & Loomis respond to Brees interview on WWL

Saints owner Tom Benson and General Manager Mickey Loomis today spoke with reporters at a team press conference for the team's Hall of Fame inductees.

Benson said during the ceremonies for the event that the team plans on making history, and predicted the season's outcome:

"We win the Superbowl in our own stadium," Benson said.

Later, speaking to reporters, Benson spoke about the ongoing contract stalemate between quarterback Drew Brees and the Saints.

"Well, I talked to Drew Brees...it wasn't too long ago. He and I always have nice conversations, his agent and us and Mickey Loomis, primarily, are trying to work out the details," Benson said. "There's money involved, and two people have some difference of opinion...but it's going to be worked out. I assure you that Drew Brees will be playing here."

GM Mickey Loomis said that he did hear the interview of Brees this week by WWL Radio's Deke Bellavia.

"Well, look, I'm obviously aware of the comments, and I'm not going to respond to anything other than...look, I'm with him, I feel for him, I feel with him," Loomis said. "He wants to be here right now, I want him to be here right now, and you know, we'll work hard to get that accomplished."

Loomis said the team and Drew will eventually settle on a deal, but that it may not be right away.

"This is important, it's not just important to Drew, but it's important to our team," Loomis said. "The magnitude of this contract is going to impact our team for a long, long period of time, and so we've got to get it right. Got to get it right. It's got to be right for Drew, but it's got to be right for our team as well. And...We'll get there."

I'm not worrying about how long it's taken. There's been so much crap to deal with this offseason what with being smart about signing LB's who could replace Vilma in lieu of the eventual suspension that he got and focusing on the draft. I understand Drew's frustration but it's not like he's missed anything yet. There's still plenty of time to get the deal done.

TBH I'd like to see it done sooner than later myself but wasn't the same thing said a month ago?

Benson has the money, it's the salary cap that has us in a tight spot. With or without the Hornets purchase the salary cap would still have us between a rock and a hard place...
