this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I like the trust, even if it is just to prove a point. It's funny actually, and knowing it will all be donated to his charity anyway....

I still say from a business prospective it was a prudent decision.
Brees/Condon KNEW that manning and or Brady would be signing very large contracts. They also knew that Brees out preformed both of them. Choices: Sign a 18m/year contract in 2011 to be the highest paid QB THAT SEASON or Wait till now and sign a 21m/year contract and be the highest paid QB for at least a few years. There was absolutely ZERO reason he should have signed early. As a fan I wish he would have signed and this would all not be happening. If he called me and asked for my advice on the best business decision, I would have said sit on it and wait. |

When Drew does sign a contract who is going to be the beneficiary from the fund?
I think it should go to the BNG. ![]() |

I do hope you are wrong about that, but if he does, he is a complete tool in my book and he loses 90% of the respect I have for him. It can't be 100% because in the end he played a big part in getting Saints their first Lombardi Trophy, and that is something that can't be taken away no matter what he does from now on out. |

Once again it's not about a lack of funds by the ownership or them not wanting to pay Brees what he is worth - in the era of strict salary caps, a team can't just pay whatever a player thinks he deserves and keep all the other players happy while keeping the team competitive in all positions.
Therefore, something like this fund is in itself useless. However, it might send a message to Brees' side and if the donations end up going to a charity then it'll be a good cause to donate to anyway. I'm just frustrated with all the ignorant "pay the man" comments that are out there, because it is not that simple, if it was, Brees would've been signed a long time ago. |

The reasoning on how it could work out for him if he sits does make sense, especially if he went to a city with more marketing potential...that's more endorsements, more money for his foundation (of which 80% he takes in is his), and of course a larger paycheck. I hate to say it, but financially it really could work out much better for him long term.

Most people know already that I have not been the biggest Brees fan and that was before all this came up. It's hard for me to keep sitting back and waiting...but there is an "I told you so" stuck inside me and just dying to get out. I am being patient and waiting this thing out...which is all we can do.
Here's my confusion...If Drew is that great...then why is he here? I know...he was injured...but let's play make believe. Let's make believe that he never played in SD and he came here first and had the success that he's had since he has been here...and then got the injury. Would we let him walk? So, is it that Drew is that good, or Payton's schemes are that good, or San Diego's organization is that bad...or does the truth lie somewhere in the middle of all that? We got a Lombardi, so I can take another 40+ years for another if I have to. I don't want to, but I'd rather they let him walk than to let him hold us hostage. I firmly believe that there is someone out there who can replace him if need be and within a few years people could be saying, "Drew who?" He wouldn't be the 1st Drew to experience this if it did indeed happen! |
Whether you think you can or think you can't...you're right!
