This 3rd Franchise Year thing
So if you've ever looked at a court document and you're not a lawyer, you might imagine a short english man shouting the words to a crowd, trumpets sounding off in the background while a king sits on a throne with a disapproving glare. It sounds awfully proper. And awfully, painfully detailed. Well, the CBA talks about the third year thing (link and quote below) and its not very specific regarding whether its one or many teams tagging a player, it does not specify whether its consecutive or cumulative. If I'm an arbitrator, Brees gets the money. But to be honest, I could give two poops if a franchise tag yields a 144% increase. I want a contract. I'd just hate to think that Condon is using Brees to make this point. I don't think Brees would go along with it.
http://nfllabor.files.wordpress.com/...-2011-2020.pdf Page 60 (b) Any Club that designates a player as a Franchise Player for the third time shall, on the date the third such designation is made, be deemed to have tendered the player a one-year NFL Player Contract for the greater of: (A) the average of the five largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position (within the categories set forth in Section 7(a) below) with the highest such average; (B) 120% of the average of the five largest Prior Year Salaries for players at the position (within the categories set forth in Section 7(a) below) at which the player participated in the most plays during the prior League Year; or (C) 144% of his Prior Year Salary. (By way of example, a kicker desig-nated as a Franchise Player for the third time in the 2014 League Year would have a Required Tender equal to the greater of: (i) the average of the five largest 2013 Salaries for quarterbacks; (ii) 120% of the average of the five largest 2013 Salaries for kickers; or (iii) 144% of the player’s own 2013 Salary.) If the Club designates the player as a Fran-chise Player for the third time, the designating Club shall be the only Club with which the player may negotiate or sign a Player Contract. In lieu of designating such a player as a Franchise Player for the third time, any Club may designate such player as a Transition Player pursuant to Section 3 below. |

I believe what Brees/Condon are doing when they push this Franchise Tag issue is telling Loomis/Benson.
"A contract would be cheaper in the long run." |

I don't think anyone cares about the $3mil this year. That'd be ridiculous to care about that and it be the sticking point.
Somebody needs to hit Bob Sugar with their car. Get me Jerry Maguire on the phone. |
