Sully is a Big 'Ol Boy

A shiver went through the Saints’ organization when second-year DT Johnathan Sullivan showed up for the team’s recent minicamp tipping the scales at a whopping 350 pounds. Hunkering down at the dinner table wasn’t really the kind of offseason workout the team had in mind for Sullivan, who was the sixth overall pick in last year’s draft. Sources say the team is terrified that Sullivan will become the second coming of former DTs Norman Hand and Grady Jackson, both of whom were run out of the Big Easy due to their weight problems. Sullivan’s immaturity was a problem at times last season, and he developed more slowly than expected as the season wore on. He was listed at 313 last season but likely played at least 10 pounds heavier, and the Saints were hoping to move toward a leaner, quicker set of tackles inside with the addition of free-agent DT Brian Young. The team isn’t panicking just yet — we still are months away from the opening of training camp — but the words of late general manager Jim Finks have been echoing throughout Saints camp. “Once you’re a fat guy, you’re always a fat guy, Finks said about then-FB Craig “Ironhead

Hopefully this guy will get it together and become the player this organization thought they were drafting when trading the 17th and 18th picks in the 1st round last year to move into the 6th spot of the 1st round where they drafted him. So far the team has let it be known that he has been somewhat disappointing with an immature attitude regarding taking his responsibilities serious ( fined heavy for being late to meetings last year), not being in the best possible shape (last year and so far this year), lack of understanding on field techniques and responsibilities which limited his number of snaps, and lack of production when on the field. Part of the problem here is drafting a guy on potential.

Who else could have been drafted with the 6th pick last year that would have filled another need with proven ability? Who could we have picked had we just stayed at 17 & 18 and picked there? Or, could we have traded down and multiplied those picks? This guy needs to understand just what we gave up to get him and take his job serious.

The Saints picked up Kendrick Allen as an undrafted F/A and he saw almost as much action and results as Sully. When you give up two number ones for a player and nothing for another with similar production, it seems like a terrible roi on the 1st and a terrific roi on the latter.

Also consider, had Sully stayed at Georgia for his senior season and he and Chad Lavalais were coming out at the same time would he be worth two number ones and Lavalais only worth a 5th? I\'m have a little trouble understanding other than hoping that potential translates into performance.

Elsewhere in the division

Atlanta

We’re told it truly is a different day for the Falcons. The arrival of new head coach Jim Mora was expected to shake up the organization, but nobody expected the combination of new general manager Rich McKay and Mora to be so explosive so soon. Mora conducted his first minicamp at a much quicker pace than predecessor Dan Reeves, and he demanded discipline from everyone around the team. That included a reporter who answered his cell phone during one of the workouts. The newsman immediately was told that he would have to hang up his phone and not let it happen again. Sources say the players are responding to the new atmosphere with more enthusiasm than was ever seen during Reeves’ reign. Reeves usually took a conservative approach to things, and considering the success he had had as a coach in the past, it’s understandable why he would take the tried and true road. But we’re told the Falcons already are more in tune with Mora’s tempo and are itching for training camp to roll around.
