If you guys think that a couple of good ends equates to a great pass rush, you\'re nuts. A good rush requires pressure from your DTs also... and LBs... Corner fires... safeties... different looks... keeping the O-line off balance not knowing where the rush is coming from. Good ends help, but a good pass rush is more a function of system than personnel. Now we\'ve got Will Smith and all of a sudden we\'re going to have this incredible pressure? Right, b/c Howard and Grant were a couple of bums last season. Oh, but Howard was hurt right? Bottom line, Willie Whitehead, the forgotten man in all this, was fierce in Howard\'s absence. He\'s maybe the most physically tuned of all of them. Our DEs were fine last season. Now we have 4 maybe 5 capable players at a position that never requires more than 2 be on the field at once. This isn\'t like WR or CB. You get 2 guys, no more, no less.

There\'s talk about utilizing W.Smith at the BUCK or 9-technique. It worked when with Clemons (his best year I think) and D.Smith a few years back. Of course we had Zook, so that makes a big difference.
I think our pass rush will be better next year for several reasons, many of which I\'m sure you\'ll take issue with
1. Darren Howard at full strength. Missing 10 games can put a burden on the pass rush eh?
2. Charles Grant entering his 3rd year, should continue improving.
3. Sullivan entering his 2nd year and moving to his natural nose position. Improvement very likely.
4. Young is a solid 3-tek guy, know for gettin in the backfield and really fast.
5. John Pease is a real coach.
6. Cie Grant and Watson are a lot faster than Ruff and Rodgers. And I imagine the talent level is probably already a wash.

I don\'t take issue with any of that Danno. When you add five linebackers and five defensive lineman in two years... plus a new d-line coach... you damn well better get more of a pass rush. And you better play well against the run too.

I\'m confused though Danno, maybe you can clear this up for me. Grant and Watson are likely to compete for the starting MLB spot with the loser (supposedly Grant) going to WLB, right? Then we\'re talking about Smith playing the \"buck\" position. So you\'re talking about Rookie, Rookie, First Year Starter at LB, no? Now I\'m excited!

Well I\'m assuming they beat out the others, which would imply they are better. I think they will be starters by season\'s end, IMHO.
The Buck won\'t be all game long either. Only in certain packages.
Or maybe we just keep the 3 LB\'s we had last year because we don\'t want no rookies startin\' on this team.

Or maybe we sign a decent STARTER in Free Agency. Imagine that!
