My theory on Duncan is that from the very beginning he has been consistently parroting back the league's version of events on everything, not asking any questions, and being condescendingly arrogant to Saints fans, for one reason only. Well two reasons. One, because the Super Bowl is being held in New Orleans this year, and he wants/needs to get himself press credentials to the big game -- a free ticket, laminate pass, parties in the suites, interview access, media day, access to warmups, after parties, etc. Bountygate threatens his free ride on the gravy train. If he writes a bunch of stuff that rocks the boat, or asks for the truth, he risks not getting his precious laminated press pass and the big fancy envelope of media credentials from Goodell and the league. It's a classic big fish/small pond type mentality, and very New Orleans. It's the only explanation I've found, that makes his taking the league's side on everything, make sense. The other reason #2 why Jeff Duncan is being a jerk is because, he clearly doesn't like Mickey Loomis and Coach Payton. Which is kind of pathetic and sad. I think Coach Payton probably senses which reporters have a clue about football, from sitting at the podium and talking to them and taking questions each week, and Duncan is bothered because Payton doesn't "like" him and sorta blows him off... A lot of the smug, cocky, devilish, "arrogant" Sean Payton persona, that we fans love so much, is not really arrogance, it is just him reacting to sorta stupid questions, from goofball local press people like Kenny Wilkerson, and Jeff Duncan etc. Our press corps is really small market and amateur here, and Payton knows it. So Duncan beats this "Sean Payton is arrogant towards the media" drum every chance he gets and it just isn't supported by facts. If you watch Sean Payton with the national media, or with veteran reporters, or with television reporters who have played the game themselves, he is actually very respectful and very cordial. He's been in New York, Philly and Dallas, so he knows all about the typical overblown, self important, small-fish local media types like Jeff Duncan, and how to work around them. |
