Practice Squad Expanded
Due to the expansion of the practice squad this year expect most teams to carry a 4th QB on the roster allocating him to the practice squad. It is with this intention that the league has expanded the practice squad. The QB position depth of quality backups has been diluted in recent years due to teams not tutoring a 4th player on their squad throughout the year. NFLE has been a foster home for players to develop and showcase their abilities by getting game action. The NFL has a huge learning curve for QBs and takes even the best a few years to learn the game. Being on an NFL roster year round will allow younger QBs to develop at a faster pace and in more numbers is what the league is banking on.
It will be interesting to see this year once the injury bug begins to bite the QB position around the league. Some teams may activate the 4th stringer from their practice squad as the 3rd stringer or leave him there knowing he is insurance should either of the remaining two players ahead of him get injured. What we may see is teams signing players off of other teams practice squads over their own. What makes this scenario most interesting is that when you sign a player from another teams practice squad you must add him to your 53 man roster ( however, he doesn't have to be activated to the 45 man game day roster ) which will require a player to be cut from your current 53 man roster. Expect more churning of the bottom of rosters and practice squads this year than in the past several years. |
