Message to McCarthy from Belichick
I don\'t think that it is any great revelation that having more points that the other team is generally a good thing.
To me it all depends. In general, what Bellicheck is saying is true, and I agree with it. That being said, the Saints are like the exception to every rule. Think back to \'02 when we had that truly explosive offense and a terrible defense. Playing with a lead HURT. Yeah, it hurt. We would get conservative and our defense couldn\'t stop anybody and we\'d let it get away from us.
We played best, especially early that year, when trailing. Game 1 of the year we almost lost a 20 point lead to Tampa. Week 3 (I think), we overcame a 20 point deficit to the Bears to win. We played best that season when pressed. When we had to make plays. I think our play calling often get conservative when we get a lead. Defensively, I don\'t think we get more aggressive. If anything, we get more reactive - falling back into that prevent type defense that just guards against the big play.
Don\'t get me wrong, I agree with Bellicheck, I just don\'t know how well the theory works in NO.
That\'s exactly my point.
