I say sign him and let him battle it out. Low Risk / High Reward.
If his skills sucks, cut him
If his attitude sucks, cut him

Best case: He shines and contributes.

Worst case: He gets cut, then he could be labeled by many here as Hasletts 47th \"Team Cancer\" in 4 years.

It is highly unlikely that the Saints will be trading for a an upgrade in the starting lineup for corners. So the next best thing is to add depth, a steady crop of able corners makes the whole unit better. And if one of our starters were to get injured one of the backups would step up, it\'s just the nature of the game. So I would love to see them sign Eric Kelly, and for that matter Shane Walton (Rams safety that just got cut from ND) too.

I say that getting one of the Raider\'s CBs sounds like a very good plan. Let\'s get Phil Buchanon or Walker - either would be a solid 3/4th stringer and excellent nickle guy if Ambrose or Craft get hurt.

I thought Harper was a Safety - thus, my few protests about depth at Safety. If he is a CB, all the better, but I don\'t think he is.

Competition at the CB position can only help the team this year. Other than Thomas there aren\'t really any established starters (though I expect that Ambrose will be our NB). Imagine if two guys fought it out in training camp and surpassed Thomas even - that would leave us in GREAT shape with Thomas as our NB and Ambrose for Dime or reserve! Kick azz.

He is a CB kinda. He can and does play both. He played safety during TC last year and took over for T\'bucky in the 2nd half of the Colts game last year.
It would be unfair to judge him by that game though since I think we had about 4 starters healthy on defense.

He may be listed as a CB, but I think his future is at FS or even a SS if he can add some bulk.

My .02, to steal from a fellow WhoTang Clan member:

Depth at corner is a concern. Quality at corner is a concern. Getting better starting corners would be nice, however not essential to success this season. Adding depth is MORE important... why???

B/c last year our two starting corners got hurt. If Thomas and Johnny Jacksonville get hurt, what\'s left? Brown and Ambrose. That\'s scary. What\'s worse, who is our nickelback in THAT situation???

You don\'t think the Saints need depth at corner, and like Danno said, safety as well, you\'re plain nuts.

Phillip Buchanon a 3rd or 4th stringer? Are you out of your mind? He would be an immediate starter on almost any team in the league. If you remember it was a toss up between picking him or Stallworth a couple of years ago. I was happy with the pick of Stallworth, but it was tough because I am a Miami fan.

Last year he had 6 ints and returned 2 for touchdowns. He returned 2 punts for touchdowns. Oh yeah, he blocked 2 kicks, too.

Not bad for his second year in the league, huh?

There\'s no way the raiders would get rid of buchanon. They know with him and woodson, they are set at CB for years. Granted, I would love for us to get buchanon, i think he would come in and start from day 1. I thought we should have gone him over stallworth, but thats neither here nor there. we arent going to get a shutdown corner, thats almost a given. i would take buchanon over mckenzie any day. a player who plays with heart, not someone who plays with their hand on their wallet. But let\'s get real, thomas and craft our the guys for this season, whether we like it or not.

is this all really happening????

I can\'t believe that I\'m getting yelled at for saying something conservative!

I agree with you guys; I was secretly salivating over Buchanon too!

PS - Danno, thanks for the info - solid as always. I\'m kinda excited about this Harper kid.

PPS - WhoDat is totally on the money with this:

Houston Texans: Moving to further strengthen a secondary that will undergo some changes this season, the Texans have claimed former Vikings cornerback Eric Kelly on waivers.
