RGIII / NEWTON

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; RG3 is similar to Newton but he will not take off as much as him. I see RG3 struggling a bit in this first game, especially in a place like the Superdome. Either way... I can't wait....

I think just the noise of the superdome, and his nerves will sink in for his first game.

However, like someone previously said. Did we expect anything like that from Cam last year? 400 yards passing in his first game. RG3 is faster than Cam, right up there with Vick in his prime, 40 yard dash time, anyway.

That being said, he doesn't have have too many weapons to work with. I can't name one receiver on their team outside of Santana Moss and he's way past his prime. Their tight end, Fred Davis, is pretty good so hopefuly Spags teaches someone, ANYONE to cover a tight end.

Garcon is impressing everybody the first few days in camp. His athletic ability is pretty insane. Moss will be operating out of the slot and will be his usual deep dangerous self. After that you have Josh Morgan who has talent, but has been injured for most of his career. Next WR slot will be a battle in camp between a few hopefulls... My money is on Brandon Banks filling that slot, but he is a tiny tiny little man. His prowess is mainly on ST where he is a threat to take any return to the house.

This year I feel we will see some 2 tight end sets with Davis and Cooley which is definitely intriguing. The main issue will be RG3 learning to roll out and throw to his right.

Reports out of camp are showing that he has an easier time throwing to the left with more space than the right as he rolls out. But with faster more elite defenders, he is finding it hard to square his shoulders and release the ball before he is caught by the defenders. (To be fair he has Orakpo and Kerrigan chasing him down every play)

Can RGIII study film of the new Saints defense? Nope -- not really.

Can the Saints study film of RGIII from college, to look for tendencies, patterns, things he likes to do with the ball etc.? Yup, you betcha.

Advantage Saints.

I predict he is going to burn at least one time out in the first quarter, just by lining up and seeing something that confuses him. The Dome will be louder than anything he has EVER heard on the college field before.
LBCutta and st thomas like this.

We're home in that first game; BIG TIME advantage! Especially against a rookie in his first game, Spags zone will have him completely confused...

Will the Saints beat them... probably, yes. But don't sell Washington short. Shanahan is developing a good team there... and they may surprise a few teams, including us we we are not prepared. RG3 is very smart. He was working on his masters at Baylor.

I think RG3 wont have the year Newton had, but he'll have the better career. Cam has accuracy problems.

Nobody has ever had the rookie season Cam had... no chance RG3 runs even half as much. But I do agree with the accuracy. RG3 rarely makes bad decisions and throws up INTs. Once he gets comfortable with the speed of the game at the NFL level the kid will be special.
