We had a rookie cb playing and 2nd year player in Patrick playing. Once we get Greer back we will be fine. If we lose the next 2 games then I will be worried

We gave up 153 yards on the ground. We need some help, but not from the CB position.

A lot of that is due to Shanahan's good gameplan, IMO. They wore down the defensive linemen with the edge plays in the first quarter, forcing the linemen to chase down receivers.

I thought that it seemed pretty apparent that some of the guys were running out of gas even in the 3rd quarter when the Redskins started to run much more effectively and consistently.

That is kind of misleading; their T.O.P. was through the roof. If the offense would have kept drives going like their supposed to, they would have only had 70 or so I think...

In a 60 minute game, they had the ball for 40 minutes

What's misleading about it? It is what it is.

that's not all the defenses fault... I think the offense had 4-5 3 and outs...

I hope I am wrong, but, it could take a few years to build a dominant defense. I see nothing about the Saints D right now that would make me believe that it can be done in less than a season or even one season.

So here we are, Game 1 over- the Skins come into OUR HOUSE, beat us with a rookie QB, pedestrian D, and a third string RB. Same issues on D as the pre-season.

Just hope Spags gets it running right before it's too late!

One thing I notice about all Fan Message Boards for sports teams is that you simply CANNOT post anything critical about the team without being ruthlessly bashed by a number of other fans.

Some boards are worst than others, but, what I say here is generally the truth.

The Saints Defense is below average. It might be even worse than it was last season. I don't think that there are any quick fixes, because, IMHO, the player personnel on Defense are deficient -- for some reason they do not "get it done."

This has been a problem for some years now with the Saints Defense. This is not a question of fandom, faith, patience or anything other than just my opinion based upon observation, and, my experience watching the Saints since 1967.

I will hope for the best from this Defense, but, I do not expect them to become a good defense this season.

Mediocrity is not acceptable. Even for a moment.

This loss is unforgivable. NFC loss, to boot...

On the bright side, Bayer: AG (Bayer Aspirin) trades in the non-cyclical pharmaceuticals.

It's a BUY.

Re: Trust in Spags?

Spags became a very good D-coordinator and earned a head coaching job off this. It will come eventually but I doubt it will be this year.

He took what I consider to be a pedestrian secondary and linebacker corp in NY and put them behind the best D-line in the league and made a top defense. We simply do not have the ability to pressure the pocket with our base personnel like NY did. Even in St Louis he had a better lineman in Chris Long than any of our guys. Will Smith is a good veteran player. Cam Jordan is a good young kid who plays the run and the pass decently. Bunkley and Ellis are underachievers who flash talent one second and glaring errors the next. We have 4 former first rounders who don't even get mentioned in top lineman conversations, and in NY he had guys who were known as some of the best there is. Huge difference. And it will take a year or two for this to round out or change personnel to fit this.

We are going to go through some tough growing pains but I have little doubt he can turn our defense into a better unit than we have been in a while.
