Have we gone from the "2007 patriots" to the "2007 or 2011 giants"?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Many people on here(myself included) along with the talking heads thought we would resemble the 2007 patriots after they were punished. I'm not talking about 18-1 but perhaps repeating what we did last year. Do I still think we can ...

I'm not talking about 18-1 but perhaps repeating what we did last year.

Do I still think we can go 13-3? Yeah. I think it's more realistic for us to go 12-4 and 11-5 at this point but as I look at the schedule and the only games I can think of that we'll probably lose is the packers and broncos away because we don't do well outside. But of course 13-3 isn't my REALISTIC prediction but I wouldn't be surprised.
I look at the redskins game and I think deep. I look at the redskins game I think "this was our 2-14 rams game".

Here's a new QB whose a heisman winner.
That no one has ever seen before.
There was zero film on him.
Not to mention the redskins have a good defense.
And they beat the giants twice last year.

I think about things like this and honestly?

Unless your NFL team has a super bowl defense like the ravens, 9ers, and the jets when they're not acting like idiots, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if the redskins beat every other team in the NFL if every other team was put in the same position as us with no info on RG3.

Obviously the atmosphere has changed since the redskins game.
The talking heads now speak of the saints as the team "that has ended before it's begun"(even though it's only week 1).
But they also said the same thing about the giants last year.
Now I don't think we'll go 10-6 or 9-7 like the giants did because we're a different team from them.

But the fact that here we are with a damn good defensive coordinator.

Who has a good system that just happens to take forever to get used to.
And it was also the same system used that made the giants win the super bowl in 2007 and it stills shows even now every time I see the giants play.

And now we're considered at the bottom of the barrel. It won't take multiple years for this defensive scheme to show itself. Just one. Can that translate to a super bowl? I hope so and it's not crazy to think so.

Because the same year that Spags was hired, was the same year they went to the super bowl.

You could say "oh they had better D players".
But you wouldn't know they had better players if you saw them during their many losses.
Plus who says we don't have great D players?

Curtis Lofton
Jabari Greer
Malcolm Jenkins
Will Smith
David Hawthorne
Akiem Hicks

We have bad players too but the giants in 2011 had some of the worse secondaries and they're superbowl champions.
I recently saw Greer on a stat book list that had him ranked as the 2nd greatest cornerback in the league(second only to Darrelle Revis).
We have great players. We just need to translate them into a defensive scheme that works(which I have faith that this one does). IT JUST TAKES TIME. And I think that the offense can carry us for a bit until that time comes and we get Vitt back(Especially since the next few teams we play have terrible defenses unlike the skins).

WHO DAT!

Possibly but its going to be a lot harder road than the Giants had even if we happen to squeak into the playoffs.

Most people. They had a future hall of fame player on their defense. We can wish and hope that our guys will develop under Spags the way the Giants players did in their run, but thats a reach.

One thing we have going for us is that we have a far more superior offense than they had. If we can put up 30+ pts per game we should beat most teams we play.

I can see Curtis Lofton and Greer becoming something similar to Michael Strahan.

Especially since I hear how Lofton wasn't exactly used to his highest potential in Atlanta.

That same future hall of famer got that ring BECAUSE of the exact same system that we are in now. And besides Strahan the rest of the giants D wasn't that consistent at the beginning of the season(just like us).

I think my hopes of ripping off an insane 18-0 streak of total dominance and winning every game by 30 points have obviously kind of evaporated and been blown out the window. BUT I keep repeating the mantra of "If we can just hang in there and be 3-3 when Vitt comes back, that's good enough, we can piece together a run at the end and run the table." I think Kromer and the team are stuck in a bad situation right now. It's exactly what Goodell wanted, to punish the fans. These next games are going to be very rocky and kinda un-Saints-like, or un-Payton-like, but I have a feeling it will change a lot when Vitt comes back.
