Our Defense
Is there anything good to say about this Defense at all? I cannot see a shining light amongst what I thought, at the start of the season, was far improved on last season, including the main change to DC what with Spagnuolo being in town.
From the front. Absolutely no pressure whatsoever. Our Pass Rush never looks like it could threaten any QB with a sack and there is very little pressure from the interior either. There is no concept of containment either inside or outside as we seem to get gashed time and again with the run. At times, Carolina were picking up over 10 yards a carry consistently, or so it seemed. LineBackers. What is going on here? I thought this was far improved and on paper, certainly seemed to be but the man and zone coverage is wayward and we are giving up smaller completed passes with regularity as opposed to say letting the odd big play slip but breaking up checkdowns and passes into the slot. Maybe I am being harsh because they are having to cover up the problems of the rest of the defense. They don't look good but maybe the best we have :( Corners and Safeties. Patrick Robinson is awful. And I am being polite. He has been unproductive since we drafted him and is now actually becoming a liability. Time and time again he is being targeted and he never seems to have any answers at all. Greer coming back is massive for us but only lends itself to everyone throwing at Robinson! Corey White is looking every bit the rookie at the moment as well. As for safeties, Jenkins always concerns me but is ok. Harper I do not rate at all and haven't done for many seasons. He would serve better further up into the defense. Not a safety. When you are conceding over 30 points a game, you cannot keep relying on your offense, however good it is, to keep digging you out of trouble. And with our O-line looking less than stellar, this could be a horribly long season. I'm not hitting any hate/panic switches. I love this team and will do if we go 0-16 but surely we all have the right to ask some questions? We actually spend a tonne of cash on that defense (how many high draft picks are there in that starting 11??????) and we do not get that calibre of player. Grumble. |
Re: Our Defense
Our what?
What the hell did they defend? They should switch names with the offense because that is what they are: OFFENSIVE!! |
Re: Our Defense
The only players who looked decent through 2 games were Bunkley, Jordan and Harper. The rest have been major diappointments.

Re: Our Defense
I want to see the ranked stats on Tuesday. They've got to be the worst defense in the NFL right now, no? I'd love to see a stat on how many times teams punt against them, we have to be in the last 2 or 3 in forcing punts, I would think. The other team can receive the kickoff or punt and it can be first and 10 on their own 10 yard line, and you can practically just go ahead and chalk another 7 on the scoreboard for them. We're always behind, no matter if the Saints offense looks good or bad.

Re: Our Defense
I read somewhere that Spags' defense always looks bad when he first takes over but that it improves as time goes on. I'm hanging hope on that. Other wise I'll just have to start drinking again.

Re: Our Defense
Sorry but you lost credibility with "Jenkins always concerns me but is ok"
ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? This guy is so bad its laughable. Just one example..that 66 yd pass to Smith..guess who's fault that was? The guy is so lost in this scheme..I am willing to bet we have the worst safety tandem in the league. |

Re: Our Defense
Agree with Danno completely.
That 66 yard pass was Patrick Robinson - AGAIN - who took the WR inside. He should have handed him off to Jenkins and stayed with the outside man, Steve Smith, who gashed him for the play. I'm happy to admit Jenkins is not an amazing player. I think though that he has improved and is not even close to being the first thing I would fix on that D. |
Re: Our Defense
Last year everyone was hating on Roman, this year it's all Jenkins and you hear nothing about Harper

What defense?

We do not have a defense.

Re: Our Defense
Our Defence (if that's what you want to call it!) is absolutely sad! We gave up a ton of 40+ yard plays and didn't have a clue how to adjust. I'm going to be rooting for the Saints come whatever, but this is shaping up to be a long season. We can't continually rely on the Offense to outscore what our D gives up! The game today was painful to watch!!
|
Re: Our Defense
There is no adjustment for an inferior front 7.

We need DEFENSE - it is that simple
1) Can't stop anyone - 68 points in two games
2) Can't generate many turnovers 3) Offense always in catchup mode We are seeing a chain reaction meltdown - A) Defense blows B) Brees thinks he has to do it all C) Other team edges ahead D) We pass 4 out of 5 down and the other team knows it E) Dropped passed or other mistakes put our D back on the field F) Rinse, lather, repeat and lose It would not matter if Payton, Lombardi and Bellichek all rolled into one were the coach right now. We are not losing because of a bad challenge, a bad overall gameplan (unless you want to blame Spags' D gameplan), or a missed timeout. We fundamentally blow at defense. Go find 11 undrafted FA rookies and start them - I don't think it would look any worse and would cost the team a hell of a lot less! |
Re: We need DEFENSE - it is that simple
Well the offense gave opponents 21 of those points. Just sayin'
|
Re: Our Defense
You guys defense is great should be top 5 by the end of the season. I put my trust in Spags!

Re: We need DEFENSE - it is that simple
Ok I have listened to a lot of opinions about our defense and cant say any of them are entirely wrong.
Here is my question... What "if" Greg Williams, knew all of this and ran the Defense the way he ran the defense because that was the only way it would work? Obviously what we are trying is not working very well thus far. I am not completely sure our offense can hold up long enough to allow the Defense to catch up... We need to be able to run more to take some wear and tare off of Drew. He had another near 50 attempt game. |
Re: We need DEFENSE - it is that simple
I saw our DE's hesitate while rushing in order to keep from getting burned outside by the two most elusive running QB's in the league.
I doubt they're that scared of Ryan, Cassell, Freeman etc... |
Re: Our Defense
If this defense is even in the top 16 I will be astonished.

I also noticed that our Corners are not playing the ball at any time... they are playing the player on all of those long catches. When they played the ball there were 3-4 dropped interceptions. |
Re: Our Defense
I predict our defense will rank 33 after week 16.

Re: Our Defense
The best defence is clock control, we need to run the ball more to control the clock and help drew out. We'll see what spags can do, hopefully he can get everyone in line and pick up the defence. I imagine that against a more conventional offence (i.e. not newton and rg3 in the backfield) they can start getting some flow going and maybe get some confidence back. It's only week 2, hopefully we can smash KC and get some good vibes flowing on defence and scoop some wins before Vitt takes over.

Re: Our Defense
How long is spags hired for?
If its not fixed by game 8, I wouldn't be comfortable keeping this D for a second season |
Re: Our Defense
Too many BIG plays given up again!
|
Re: Our Defense
come on guys, with the lack of contact in practice because of the new CBA, how can you judge Spags defense after 2 weeks? It's going to take a few games and as far as always playing from behind, it's not all on the D. We were up 7-0 and the D got the ball back to us and Drew throws an ill advised pass and all of a sudden it's 7-7. Then 2 of our best receivers each drop what would have been a TD and we have to settle for 3. There's plenty of blame to go around and it's going to get better. Stop all the panic. We sound like failcons fans.

Was Alex Molden, Toi(let) Cook, Jason David and Johnnie Poe on the field today?

We mainly need our secondary to make INTs

Also a coach at the Eagles before that and turned their defense around as well... Need to do some reading: Steve Spagnuolo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
Re: Our Defense
When you're loaded with talent like the Giants then I would say almost anyone could have coached that defense as well as Phili.
So since he was the head coach he bears no responsibility on all those losing Rams teams. Gimme a break, you do some more reading and look at the players he was coaching on the teams you referred too!!!! |
