The Spagnola Scheme

Perhaps this is not the opportune year to implement Spags complicated defense. Just "maybe" there is too much going on for this? What about a 3-4 so we have an extra line backer, we do not seem to be putting pressure on the QB or stopping the RB at the line very often, why not drop one back and try to keep them to 2-3 yards?

In best case scenarios, none of which we have presently, it took defenses 3-4 games to pick it up.

When I say Best case scenario:
  • Team Captains that the defense has been under for a few seasons and trust.
  • The right players for the scheme.
  • A head coach to make sure that Spags only had to focus on the Defense.
  • An off season where the defense was not dragged through the media.
This year is the perfect storm for the Saints. Any of the issues by them selves the team could handle but all of them at once has never been put on a team in History. Maybe... Just maybe.... We should try to do this next year?

Thoughts?

Re: The Spagnola Scheme

scheme might not be right because our players on defense is not that good to begin with.

One of the glaring problems I see with our defense is they are freaking slow, one reason why they couldnt contain run option QBs like Newton and RGIII and allowed JC to run it 33 times for over 200 yards.

Running JC 33 times kind of tells you the weakness of the defense is speed.

So wait; you're saying switch to a 3-4 defense this year and then switch back to Spags zone scheme next year?

Looks like a lot more learning to me, bad idea...

I don't think changing up from one to the other and back is a good idea. But I agree with you on the effect this offseason has had on the team. I just think it's been too much to ask any human being to endure and then go out and perform at the level we have been accustomed to seeing. Goodell knew what he was doing and his plan is working to perfection.

Interesting you mention this because I got a good post about Goodell and knowing what he was doing, as well as it pertains to the schedule also, put it this way........too much of a coincidence.

Very valid point. I would agree if the defense was catching on to what Spags is trying to do now. They may be but I have not seem evidence of that in game play. The idea was based on trying to learn something they may be able to pick up in a week or two vs months... Simplifying things...

Work with me LOL... I'm fishing here for ways to not set records this year.

I think the defense was a little better yesterday, I mean holding them to 6 fgs and the offense didn't come through...

Re: The Spagnola Scheme

but they allowed JC to beat them.

The KC offense is very anemic to begin with and they scored 27 pts.
Albeit they didnt score TDs but 1, but most of that is because Cassel has no accuracy, otherwise it would of been worse.

They held to 6 at the half and then the offense had like 300 3 and outs in the second half, the defense was bound to get tired and struggle

I did mention that in another post... While they moved the ball on us almost at will, we managed to do a damn good job in the red zone. 6FG and 1 TD with 510 ttl yards is pretty damn difficult to do.

Probably because the RedZone is more condensed and its difficult for our players to wander off away from the ball...
