Don't throw in the towel just yet...

Since 2004 when Eli was traded to NY Giants, I have followed him and the Giants closely. In 2007, the year that the Giants knocked off the Pats in the SB and stopped them from going 19-0, the Giants started dismally. They were 0-2, and somewhere around that time I stated that the Giants defense was the worst defense I had seen in all my time of watching the NFL...and that included watching the Saints since the beginning.

Almost immediately after I made that statement, the defense gelled and started playing a lot better, and the rest is history. I think it may take some time for the players to pick up Spags scheme, but I do believe the possibility exists that they too can put it together and make a run. Time will tell, but after what I witnessed in '07, I will never count anyone out until they are mathematically eliminated.

Re: Don't throw in the towel just yet...

well I do like the way you think, the problem is lack of talent on this team. How long has Shanle been on this team now, and we never found someone better to replace him. How many # 1's we have on that side of the ball, and they sure as hell don't play like #1's. We have watched this team get beat under how many defensive coordinator's since SP time here? It's the players we have too slow, or just lack of talent all together.
The only ones I would keep as of right on on d Greer, and Lofton as a starter. Some others would keep for a back up.

But I will never throw in a towel on this team, I never have before and will not start now.

I HATE ATLANTA

Totally agree, the only thing that's worrying is that while our defense is struggling, our O looks real bad Aswell

Offense is all about rhythm and something is wrong, I'm putting it down to 3 things, brees trying to make too many big plays (forcing passes) Paytons absence and our left and right turnstiles...oops I mean tackles

Zach strief is not a good player, he gets abused every week, it almost makes you forget how bad Bushrod is because brees keeps getting hit from striefs side, almost anyway lol

Re: Don't throw in the towel just yet...

Why to be optimistic and hang on to that towel:

1st game - trainwreck, but O and D looked "Saints" for one possession/series each
2nd game - dominated for a little over 1 quarter
3rd game - dominated for 1 half
4th game - see the trend?

It may be turning around sloooooow, and too late for a fun 13-3 type year, but there is evidence out there that we are getting flashes of "normal" Saints ball, then periods of awful suck, but it's not constant suck all the time, which would happen if we were really a bad team.

We have survived with these same crappy OT's before and won a few games. We have survived with no pass rush before and won games...we have survived with this lack of talent on defense before and won games...

We have not played a "complete" game yet, the whole game in all phases. Who knows how long it will take, but when we finally do play a complete game on both sides of the ball, it is going to be fun to watch the team again.

It seems that we are getting better on D from game to game because he is giving more snaps to the younge guys game to game. If we keep this trend up, we may just turn it around afterall.

Agreed, agreed, agreed. And furthermore, not only will I not throw the towel in, I will not wear a bag on my head no matter how bad it gets.

If you wear a bag, you are NOT a fan. End of discussion.

I do believe the defense is starting to gel...and find things that work and things that don't with Spags and the talent he has to work with.

We beat Oakland this week and, IMO, we are right in the thick of the WC race...and furthermore, whether we make it back or not, I know the teams out there with the Saints remaining on their schedule are not happy about that.

Re: Don't throw in the towel just yet...

Darren Sharper said it best on the NFL channel the other night. "In 2009 we didn't have a good defense, we were ranked 25th but we made big plays that changed games".

We are starting to see turnovers and big plays stopped. We do not need a defense full of talent, we have never had that.

I think the theory that a soft defense actually makes offenses take chances and that is where we capitalize. If we had a strong defense, offenses would play more conservatively.
