this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I saw the story about the D on ESPN or one of those other shows that I briefly watch before determining they're full of hot air and just reporting for ratings and change the channel ... how in the hell ...

Re: Some perspective on the D
I saw the story about the D on ESPN or one of those other shows that I briefly watch before determining they're full of hot air and just reporting for ratings and change the channel ... how in the hell can you be the worst defense in NFL history when you've won a couple games?
@#$% the stats, the whole purpose of defense is to stop your opponent and if you've done it enough to win a few games, how can you be worse than a defense that couldn't stop anyone enough for a single "W"? ie the 1976 Buccaneers (0-14) and the 2008 Lions (0-16) ... the Buccaneers went 0-26, for crissake, before they even won their first game as a franchise! There's a couple candidates for 'worst defense in NFL history', IMO. Yes, they're bad, but that is the way NFL teams are structured these days, with an emphasis on offense and just enough defense to stop your opponents enough times to outscore them. Who has a really dominating defense anymore? San Francisco? the Giants? the Ravens? Maybe the Forty-Niners, but I look at most the defenses in the NFL as unable to stop the high-powered offenses with the elite QB, not just New Orleans. Stats are stats, but if your 'D' is good enough for a few wins on Sunday, they can't be the 'worst in the history of the NFL' ... bet. |

Old time Saints fans remember 1980 - the closest thing to the level of "production" of this defense. 1980 followed two of the most promising Saints seasons to date, when fans thought the franchise was turning the corner... True, this is more of an offensive league and stats tend to be inflated, but this team is not only sailing past the 1980 defense's mark of futility, it is currently dropping a handful of nukes on it. Don't fall into the "bend but don't break" argument of some. This defense rocketed past "bend", flew past "break" and has SHATTERED. 1980 scoring D - 487 points allowed - 30.4 per game 2012 scoring D - 230 points allowed - 32.9 per game |
