Payton to Dallas? NFL Voids His Saint's contract.

Sources: Sean Payton contract voidedUpdated: November 4, 2012, 8:54 AM ETBy Adam Schefter | ESPN Recommend195Tweet168Comments144EmailPrintWithin the past year, the multiyear contract extension the Saints announced for Sean Payton in September 2011 was voided by the NFL, making the suspended head coach a free agent after this season and casting questions on how long he will remain in New Orleans, according to league sources.

Payton is expected to become the NFL's most sought-after head coach after this season and there already is speculation in league circles that he could wind up returning to Dallas, where he worked as the assistant head coach from 2003 to 2005, during which time the Cowboys brought in quarterback Tony Romo, who attended the same college, Eastern Illinois, as Payton.

Saints Bounty Scandal
An NFL investigation found the New Orleans Saints operated a bounty system that rewarded 22 to 27 players for hard hits and for injuring opposing players. Profile »

Just as Payton's role in the bounty scandal has been an ongoing saga with the NFL for the past year, so has his contract.

As recently as March, when Payton was visiting NFL offices to appeal his yearlong suspension in the bounty scandal, he asked NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the status of his contract extension and was told it was unsatisfactory as it initially was constituted, sources said.

At issue in the contract was one specific clause that would have enabled Payton to walk away from the deal if general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended, fired or left the New Orleans organization, sources said.

The league believed that any such language in Payton's contract would set a bad precedent for other coaching contracts and rejected the deal well before Loomis was suspended for the first eight games this season for his part in the bounty scandal.

Dating back to roughly the start of this year, the two sides engaged in numerous subsequent conversations to try to resolve the issue but never did.

In the interim, the league has granted Payton permission to work for Saints owner Tom Benson's NBA New Orleans team, and the suspended head coach has been doing some spot work there to earn income.

Some in the league office believe Payton's contract could toll -- meaning the last year would be put on hold, tying him to New Orleans for the 2013 season -- but there is no evidence to confirm that possibility. Until now, the league has not been asked to review or rule on the contract, according to sources, though some believe it eventually could.

To others, there is no issue. Payton will be a free agent. Some believe Payton's strong relationship with Benson will be enough to keep him in New Orleans long term.

But others are more skeptical, knowing that the suspended head coach has undergone some personal changes in his life that have included going through a divorce and spending plenty of time in Dallas.

When Benson initially announced last year the extension for Payton that never got league approval, he said: "I am very pleased to announce this contract extension today for Sean that will run through the 2015 season. Our goal is to continue to build a tradition of winning here in New Orleans and Sean represents that tradition."

If he were to leave I'd lose all respect for him. I don't expect it though. I don't see him leaving Drew, and Drew just signed with us. I hate to say conspiracy, but with RG and this NFL I honestly see it. I think they're trying to get us relocated to L.A. and that isn't possible unless we are dreadful.

I can't imagine that he would leave us in this state after building this organization to something it had never been. Maybe I am wrong though....

A friend of mine just texted me about this.
I have NFL network on but I about to leave for 9:00 Mass, so I 'll catch it later.

Sean P., free agent. Hmmmm.
Lets read the writing on the wall....maybe.
Sorry folks.
Sean's ex wife is in Dallas.
Sean 's children live in Dallas and with career, as great as it is, you can't place your young children in the career , but place the career in the children. Put the career where the kids are.
His kids need him more than a football team does.
Dallas is home to these children.
His wife seemed to want Dallas as their perm home.
Dallas Cowboys are not doing well. Sean worked for Jerry Jones before.
You know Jerry Jones is sick and tired of this losing thing.
Add to that, you have this other team in Texas, The Texans, taking over.
You can predict coaching changes there in D ' Cowboy land.
Hmmmm....:confused:so be it. Best to Sean P.

This just keeps getting better & better. I'm sorry but this feels like trolling by the NFL to annouce this today. And I just don't see how Payton leaves. Drew is his QB...this is HIS team. Going to Dallas to be controlled by an ego maniac is not Payton's MO. He would either be stuck with Romo or a new QB if they don't win games this year. I'm sorry but I don't see him giving up his record breaking Offense that he built and is still in its prime to start all over again.

I think he stays...and I think he gets an even bigger deal than he had before because 1. he gonna need the money he lost back and 2. Us without hi this season has proven he's the best coach in the league.

@RapSheet
Interesting stuff from @michaelombardi on Sean Payton's contract. Says many NFL people doubt he'll be a FA. May end up in hands of Commish

Still don't understand the last part about ending up in hands of Commish...but I agree with I doubt he'll be a FA...

Re: Sean Paytons Contract voided by NFL

I am afraid that Jerry Jones will play his Ace card and give Sean Payton GM/coach power and control over personnel decisions. Yes, Jerry has a huge ego but he's also 70 years old so I can see him stepping aside and semi-retiring and focusing on his ownership role at some point.

We all know that Goodell has a vendetta against the Saints and that he might want to create a feel-good story with a "redeemed" (in Goodell's eyes) Payton and American's team.

I know Payton is loyal to the Saints but the NFL is a business. Losing our contractual agreement with him can certainly not be a good thing.

@LarryHolder
Statement from the NFL on Sean Payton's contract status: "Our office has made no determination on Sean Payton's contract status with the Saints for next year. All contracts between clubs and their employees must be approved by the commissioner, and we do not comment on specific terms of individual contracts. Any comment regarding the matter should come from Coach Payton and the Saints."

Fu*k the NFL! And all their beloved "big market" teams. New Orleans has done nothing to the NFL except generate it more money... Why do u think the Super Bowl has been in New Orleans more than any other city. Words can't express how pissed off I am.

Will drews contract affect the money he may want?? If it does it may just be time to clean house. Starting with the defense.

Re: Sean Paytons Contract voided by NFL

@RapSheet: Interesting: NFL rejected the deal well before BountyGate went public RT @NFL_ATL: NFL: No decision on Payton contract

The Commish has to approve all contact extensions. Goodell rejects deal because of “language” in said extension that pretty much says “if Loomis goes I go”…commish thinks its sets wrong precedent so rejects extension. Then the Bounty BS comes out. He suspends Payton for a year…Payton doesn’t have his extension and it basically hinders Payton, Loomis, and Benson from negotiating because Loomis & Benson can have no contact.

In other words Goodell was trying to FORCE Benson and the Saints to just fire Loomis & Payton. He did this well before the scandal hit because he knew he was going to drop the bomb. Telling these guys they can’t have contact with each other…having to report any contact within 24hrs. Can’t even go to college games. This is so transparent….why drop this now of all times when this was not them Voiding his extension…this was them rejecting the extension because they had an agenda to get Payton and Loomis out of New Orleans in the first place….

Same here. I'll so far as to say that if this happens the city should boycott anything to do with the NFL including the Saints and the Super Bowl. I know the teams brings in a lot of money to the area but screw it. Continuing to support the team and league would be akin to selling your soul to the devil.

Another case of Godhell trying to kill the Saints competitiveness. He wants Payton to go to a big market team with an owner that will reign him in. Then all things will be back to normal if he can only make New Orleans wallow in squallor.
This is another shameless attempt to dismantle the coaching staff that brings a winner to New Orleans each and every year. Godhell can't have that from a small market team while his beloved Cowgirls struggle to get to .500
I don't believe that Payton will leave here, he has a good thing going and has built this organization from the ground up.

in the NFL eyes, teams like the Saints are not suppose to be competitive.

While seeing how some other fan bases handled losses today, I could not help but notice how the usual refrain of "Fire Coach X, and hire Gruden or Cowher" starting to be replaced with "Fire Coach X, and hire Gruden, Cowher or Payton."

Apparently some teams hate Payton in the same way they hate Peyton, aka hate him when he is tied to another team, but once he's a free agent, want nothing more than to have him on their side. Too bad for them though, becase we aren't sharing.

Much ado about nothing. Payton going to Dallas was speculated when he signed the extension. No way Jerry gives Payton the control he wants . Look at the part in the contract that Goodell doesn't like Sean picks the GM basically.

Candles at church have been lit because of him.
