Saints facing a cap mess in 2013

Getty ImagesMentioned in Saturday’s one-liners is the possibility that the Saints will have to shed linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith, due to their cap numbers comes 2013.

It’s part of a broader cap mess that, as explained by Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, has the Saints staring at a potential cap crunch of $16 million when the 2013 league year begins in March.

That number doesn’t include defensive lineman Sedrick Ellis and offensive lineman Jermon Bushrod, both of whom will be free agents and thus have no cap numbers for 2013, yet.

Smith has a base salary of $10.5 million next year, and Vilma is due to earn $6 million.

Complicating matters is that the team-by-team cap isn’t expected to go up much, if at all, from its $120.6 million level in 2013. And if quarterback Drew Brees is looking for an explanation, he should look no farther than his own contract, with a cap number that increases from $10.4 million in 2012 to $17.4 million next year.

It’s almost enough to make a suspended head coach with an expiring contract think about exploring all his options before signing a new deal.

So we're 16 million over already and that doesn't include Bushrod and Ellis? Bushrod will easily add 4 to 6 million to that number easily. We have some restricted free-agents to sign, although no really big names.
Ellis, Bushrod, Henderson, Shanle, Casillas, McBride, Mack and Roby.

So how do we chop off 20 million? Loomis? Loomis? Anyone?

Restructuring several contracts may cut that figure in half, but then we're still over about 10 million.

It may be more dire than I originally thought. Loomis better pull a rabbit's foo outta his ass real quick.

Re: Saints facing a cap mess in 2013

This may help. especially since 2014 is the year the new TV conrtract will cause the cap to rise dramatically...

According to a source with knowledge of the contract, Brees' $9.75 million base salary in 2013 will become fully guaranteed three days after Super Bowl XLVII. The Saints could ask Brees to reduce his base salary to the league minimum ($940,000) and convert the remaining $8.81 million into a signing bonus. If prorated over the four remaining seasons on Brees' contract, that simple restructure would reduce Brees' cap number to $10.7925 million, a cap savings of $6.6 million. The Saints could clear over $7 million in 2013 cap space if they tacked on an additional season to Brees' contract and prorated the renegotiated signing bonus over the maximum five seasons. Since the Saints are going to rob Peter to pay Paul, why not take as much as they can get now?

Drew Brees can help clean up Saints

So,
Restrucure Brees - 6.6 million
Release Smith - 7.7 million
Release Vilma - 6.0 million

There's 20.3 million, so now we need enough restructuring to resign Bushrod, or a comparable LT.

Its gonna be tight.

Have all the players with the highest contracts pick straws and the 3 lowest must restructure to help out... sounds logical... haha

The way Loomis restructures deals scares the Hell out of me. Every year we are in cap Hell and trying to restructure the contracts that Loomis drew up.

And I'm convinced he drew them up with the knowledge that they can either be restructured or the player be released if required.

This is a bull**** statement! The team was in much more critical shape when he took over. Would SP walk away from a challenge? Would he walk away from a franchise who still has Brees and has Loomis and an organization who has given him the opportunity & has supported him throughout the suspended season?

If SP walks away I will never be able to foregive him or the organization.

Re: Saints facing a cap mess in 2013

Drew would you like to have a large trust and a beautiful wife, both you won't be able to enjoy because every pass rusher in the league is pi$$ed how much you make and all will slam your head into the turf of their respective astro-turf fields or frozen tundras...or...

Would you like to have a nice nestegg and a Left Tackle to protect you so you will be afforded a post playing career as well as spend quality time with your family?!?

Tom Condon got his skin and your name on his trophy wall so he can corrupt, er sell future draft prospects on how important they are to him...

So what's it gonna be?!?

You gonna have cred or mo money?!?

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...
