Tip of the salary cap to New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis; Drew Brees unlikely to help out

In a recent article on NOLA.com, there was a suggestion that other players like quarterback Drew Brees could help out by restructuring his contract. But Brees was quoted as saying “he wasn’t even sure he’d be amenable to a contract restructure.”

If you read between the lines on that, Brees won’t be taking one for the team. He also said that “every team at times loses somebody.“ That’s also telling because it’s basically saying that if someone like Bushrod has to sign with another team than so be it because there won’t be any help from his salary.

Brees said last season that he would do what he could to help retain the core group of guys to continue a march to another championship. Cue the ensuing contract drama that lasted all the way up to training camp and the loss of Nicks and it didn’t happen so smoothly.

Poor form that IMO.
Alot of players restructured contracts to make cap for the free agents and Drew's contract. You would expect the highest paid player to do his share of it aswell.

With restructuring contracts we are just pushing cap issues a little further into the future aren't we?

Or waiting for big name players' contracts to expire so we can let them go with out penalty?

Restructuring benefits the player the most. His yearly salary is converted to bonus money, which he gets immediately in the form of a check signed by Mr. Benson. The team can then spread that out over the life of the contract, therby reducing the cap.

I'm always skeptical when snipits of what a player said are quoted. I like to read the entire conversation to get a true perspective on what the guy meant. I can say that Jimbo said Bubba is a complete idiot. The paper will then say that I said, "Bubba...is a complete idiot." It happens all the time. I trust Loomis will work his magic. I'm not worried.

Drew has proved before that his contract comes before the team.

I don't understand what the big deal is, did you touch his contract when he made 60 mil...... I don't know for sure, but I really don't think so. If you cut, and or restructure the right guys you should be fine.
