Re: DC coaching search: candidates/rumors

The New Orleans Saints are interested in former Kansas City Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel as a candidate to replace fired defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday and later confirmed by ProFootballTalk.

Crennel has not had much success as a head coach, but he's repeatedly proven himself an elite coordinator. He won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and his work with the Chiefs' defense earned him a promotion when Todd Haley was fired in 2011.

Eric Mangini is also reportedly up for the job, but a source told PFT that Crennel is the preferred choice.

Saints coach Sean Payton needs someone to get the defense back on track after a horrid effort in 2012 resulted in the No. 31 ranked scoring defense and No. 32 total defense. Crennel fits in nicely and, being one of the most well-respected men in the NFL, would be a strong addition from a public relations standpoint in the post-Bounty scandal era.

Re: DC coaching search: candidates/rumors

Mike Singletary's most famous coaching moment came during a postgame tirade after an incident with tight end Vernon Davis. He doesn't want that to be the signature moment of his coaching career.

The San Francisco 49ers fired Singletary two years ago and replaced him with Jim Harbaugh, who led the team to the NFC Championship in 2011 and then to Super Bowl XLVII this season. Singletary was one of 14 interviewed this month for the Bears opening. Quarterback guru Marc Trestman was hired, however, as the Bears wanted an offensive mind to replace the defensive Lovie Smith.

"It's hard to put into words," Singletary recently told the Chicago Sun-Times. "You play at a place, and you remember what it was like and what it took to get where you needed to go. To sit up there and talk about that job was unlike anything I've ever experienced."

The Rooney Rule has been the topic of discussion after all 15 coaching and general manager jobs open this offseason were filled by white men. Singletary doesn't want to be the next in the line African-American coaches who didn't get a second-chance at a top NFL job, but he isn't upset with the process.

"I just believe there are a lot of guys out there that are worthy," Singletary said about minority candidates. "But there are also some white coaches out there who are worthy who don't get interviews. So it goes both ways."

Singletary coached linebackers for the Minnesota Vikings the past two seasons and will continue to patiently wait for another opportunity that so many "retreads" normally get.

Do you mean Sean McDermott?

I mean he took over for Jim Johnson as the Eagles' DC.

Re: DC coaching search: candidates/rumors

I've heard rumors that the Saints are interested in hiring both Crenel and Mangini. Why would that be? Is Romeo getting old and considering retirement? Or just a backup plan in case Romeo moves on to another HC job after he wins another championship with the Saints

It's the whole Parcell's tree of coaching connection via Bill Belichick.

Mangini was the DB coach in New England when Crennel was the DC and Belichick the HC when they won three Super Bowl titles, so they have a shared history.

Mangini didn't do himself any favors with the stints he had with the Jets and the Browns, so maybe this would be a nice stepping stone for him to get back into the game and have very little risk as the spotlight would be on Crennel.
