Jets/Colts make it just because of the Joe Namath prediction-thing & it was the first time the AFL won anything. Earl Morrall started the game for the Colts, Unitas didn't come in until the third qtr after Baltimore was down by a couple of scores.
It was early in Don Shula's coaching career and he just went with the wrong horse (Morrall) in his QB controversy, that probably lost them the SB. Hindsight is 20/20, of course, ![]() |

Saying this game wasn't one of the all time great games misses the facts as well as the convergence of opposing dynamic forces that transformed professional football. Simplifying the game as merely a win by the AFC is equivalent to characterizing the invention of the assembly line as a bad day for artisan labor. |
