this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Super Bowl XLII, 2008 - New York 17, New England 14 - The 10 Best Super Bowls - Photos - SI.com ...although it should be, even with the homer goggles taken off. Some great games in that list, however....

Re: Saints SB Not Ranked Among Top Ten All Time
Well, on a positive note, it didn't make the 10 Worst SuperBowls list either, Super Bowl XXIV, 1990 - San Francisco 55, Denver 10 - The 10 Worst Super Bowls - Photos - SI.com .
I'm looking at that list, the 10 Best, and for some reason I'm thinking maybe it's because the Saints opponent was Indianapolis. IDK, I'd have to look into it more for anything more definitive. |

Re: Saints SB Not Ranked Among Top Ten All Time
Funny the Falcons SB was the worst, I always thought Atl had no business in that SB as well and believe Minny would of fought harder.
The one I cant agree with was the 49ers/Chargers SB, while Pitt/San Fran would of been better, that was SB was at least entertaining as saw an end of an era and a team similar to todays Saints team that was fun to watch sometimes. But now I do have issues on the Best SBs, quite frankly I think any SB with the Patriots in it on this list dont belong there, I watched them and they all felt like they were staged, you could literally predict what was going to happen in each of those games, least the ones New England won. Its also funny Jets/Colts is on there to, thats 4 SBs right there I firmly believe had some fishy stuff in it, from Unitas throwing that game to Spygate 30 years later. |

Re: Saints SB Not Ranked Among Top Ten All Time
Jets/Colts make it just because of the Joe Namath prediction-thing & it was the first time the AFL won anything. Earl Morrall started the game for the Colts, Unitas didn't come in until the third qtr after Baltimore was down by a couple of scores.
It was early in Don Shula's coaching career and he just went with the wrong horse (Morrall) in his QB controversy, that probably lost them the SB. Hindsight is 20/20, of course, . |

Saying this game wasn't one of the all time great games misses the facts as well as the convergence of opposing dynamic forces that transformed professional football. Simplifying the game as merely a win by the AFC is equivalent to characterizing the invention of the assembly line as a bad day for artisan labor. |

Re: Saints SB Not Ranked Among Top Ten All Time
Morall was an inconsistent starter with four different teams before being given the Colts starting job because Unitas hurt his shoulder. He had the best season of his career, which led rookie H/C, Don Shula, to start what he thought was a 'hot' quarterback in the SuperBowl despite Unitas being able to play. The rest is history.
If the game had been won by Baltimore, it would not be considered one of the top ten. The only reason it makes the list is because that game marked the end of the NFL's dominance over the AFL in championship games up to this point, and Namath's guarantee. It really is that simple. |

Re: Saints SB Not Ranked Among Top Ten All Time
I would like to know why the Saints Super Bowl didn't make the list!?
The onside kick alone was a big enough play to put the game on the list. |

Their was no real big play that happened in that game, the biggest play was an onside kick, which kind of speaks volumes on what kind of game that was. It was however a back and forth game up to a point. |

Re: Saints SB Not Ranked Among Top Ten All Time
Boring! WTFO!!
How many teams have out-scored the Colts 25-7 in a half? Other than the Saints, I can't think of any! The Saints set 2 Super Bowl records: the three 40+-yd FGs by Hartley and the first ever onside kick not in the 4th quarter! Boring? I think not!! |
