I like money but I also hate to lose so I would have been looking for a happy medium if I were in Drew's shoes, but that's just me.

If someone was willing to pay me $100 million to do my job I would take it. Sure we had Manning in the 70s and, yes, we had no one else around him to produce any wins, but that is not the case now. We have an excellent team that didn't perform well last season for a lot of reasons. Our defense certainly needs improving and I think we will see that happen with Payton's return and a new defensive coordinator. Also, Archie was the highest paid player in the league at one point in his Saints career just as Drew is now. Drew certainly has a lot more to work with than he did so let's see how this season plays out before we call him out for his large paycheck. Down the road, if restructuring is needed, I think Drew will step up.

Drew has never won a League MVP and has only one Lombardi; had a problem with his contract demands and his agent formerly known as Galactus, the destroyer of salary caps and competitive teams...

About sums it up man. That's what happens when you have top 3 or 4 in the game

Just to be sure I have this right, and I am not trying to be a jerk

1 with him
0 without

1 little caveat- that was what... 40 years without him and 6 with. I don't know, but I like the way the 1 in 6 years sounds.

And you're attempting to use that to justify why we shouldn't have paid the man, correct?

The problem or crime is paying the worse defense in the history of the NFL almost the same as you pay one of the best offenses in history. Come up with a list of defenders that "earned" their salary and you will see the problem.

This makes a whole lot of sense!

Not that this wasn't in another thread, but...

You cannot say that another team would have paid what we did because there wasn't a competitive bidding process. It is unclear, and intellectually dishonest, to say that his current salary is what the "market would bear." The Saints were in a competitive bidding situation in which their only competitor was themselves. Don't kid yourself that there were dozens of teams lining up to snatch him away for a franchise crushing $20 million a year. And, further, his original contract ($60 over 6) was a top 10 contract coming off a career threatening injury - so the specious argument that he was underpaid is not worthy of those bringing it up as a defense.

The data on skewed salary distributions does not support the argument that teams win when so much cap is concentrated on a few players. And don't cherry pick history when you argue, or you'll likely to be peer reviewed as a fraud.

Comparing the new Brady contract to Brees' contract is like comparing apples to oranges. Brees has completely fulfilled his prior contract and was able to negfociate a new one. It was going to be the last major deal of his career. Brady, on the other hand, was approaching the end of his own personal major deal. He is older and could not expect another long term deal after the end of this one. Therefore, he agreed to an extension of his current deal which guaranteed additional income for two additional years with much of what he was owed in the final year of his current deal being pushed back into the last two years.

The same kind of "extension" can be worked out with Brees in 2015 when the first major cap hit is to take place. He will then be able to guarantee more of that back-end money that is not currently guaranteed and spread the cap hit out over an additional two years.

Updating previous items, Tom Brady's new five-year contract is worth $57 million with $33 million fully guaranteed.

Brady will receive $30 million in signing bonus payments over the first three seasons. His base salaries in 2013 and 2014 are now $1 million and $2 million, respectively. The contract is essentially fully guaranteed through 2015, as in 2016 the money Brady is owed becomes guaranteed for injury only. It's possible that the Patriots could approach Brady about another restructure after that point. For now, they have the future Hall of Famer under control through 2017 at an incredibly team- and cap-friendly rate.

Which is the point behind Drews contract... While the size is a substantial hurdle, it could have been structured in a more cap friendly way.. Which it somewhat was for the first 3 years... Then like a jack in the box it comes to meet you in 2015... He could still restructure this year to help with the cap... The Fo can make it appealing to him but it doesn't come with out increased risk.
