I like it in the short perspective. Helps us tremendously this year. I'm just afraid we are pushing the problem forward.

That's my first impression about all this. I'm glad that it helps now, but we kinda knew this was coming at some point. Nothing seems to have changed in terms of the future problems.

I guess the more passive among Saints fans would say we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. But I think I'd rather let a guy go here, and another go there, over the next couple seasons until we can get our cap number straightened out, instead of getting buried in a couple of seasons. We can slowly replace guys over time. What's happening right now feels somewhat like a Kamikaze mission, though I'm pretty sure they have at least some long term plan in those brains of theirs.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

Someone said not to worry, Loomis can work magic. It's all in how you structure it, and the scenarios are endless.

And those people don't understand anything about contracts. Loomis is no magician. This is simply the only option he has. This is not a fix, by any means. I don't blame him for doing this, but it's only a band-aid.

Contracts work anyway you want them to work. There is nothing magical about that.

Getting around the salary cap is another story, and Loomis is very good at that.

I agree that Loomis is very good. However, you can't just make a contract work however you want it to. These players aren't actually taking less money, they're just pushing their salary forward, as Crusader put it earlier. You can't make a player take less money, unless he's a lesser or aging player whom you have leverage against (i.e, Will Smith and Jon Vilma). So while you may be able to restructure in a number of ways and get around things for a while, you eventually have to take on the problem.

If they were doing what the Patriots did with Brady, extending the years and spreading out the money, then you'd actually be saving money. Brady is not losing any money, but the team is better off. But you can't just willy nilly extend contracts to just anyone, to save money. Therefore it remains to be seen how this works out long term. I'm not at all panicked about it, but I am a bit concerned. We shall see. For now, it's good.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

And that's why we've seen only proven commodities who are expected to remain effective throughout their contracts get restructures - that in itself does limit the risk involved quite a bit.

No, you kinda missed my point. I'm saying extending contracts (such as the Brady extension) and spreading out the money over a longer period of time, thus making the annual cap hit lower, is a good move but not something you can do with just anyone.

The Saints are NOT extending any of these contracts, because none of these guys (except for maybe Evans) is a franchise type player. Thus we're not saving money long term. Only short term. That's my point. There are people who seem to have the impression that we're off the hook, but as of now, we're just getting by.
