this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Loomis will deal with that when the time comes, for now he got the team close to under the cap without having to break the team up...

If restructures were given to players who weren't as likely to be playing out their contracts; there'd be a much bigger risk for the Saints to be on the hook for "dead money" on those players' contracts. My point was that giving these guys the restructures was justified under the current circumstances; restructures which turn base salary into guaranteed bonuses are also something can't just do "willy nilly" with just anyone. |

I stated that I understand why Loomis is doing this. He really had no choice. It's good for now. My point is not about "dead" money. When I said you can't extend contracts "willy nilly", I meant that we didn't have any players aside from Drew who we could really entertain the idea of doing that with to save money. Extending the years and lessening the annual salary would be ideal, but not every player is willing to do that, and most aren't worth the risk. So pushing the money back to deal with later is all Loomis can really do. I'm not saying that money will be dead. It could become dead if we tried to extend these guys . But what I'm saying is that eventually we have to take on all these NOW BACKLOADED contracts. When that time comes, I don't think we'll be able to restructure again. Because these players are all at or around the age where they won't have much value left at the end of their contracts. I'm simply pointing out that this is not getting rid of the problem. I'm not arguing with what Loomis is doing. I am also not saying that we won't eventually get it all worked out. I'm just curious as to what the plan is for the future. Teams do make mistakes from time to time, so I don't think it's out of line to question them every now and then. |
If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

There are several big contracts that will be expiring over the next couple of years, Smith, Vilma, Jenkins, Harper, Sproles, PT, Greer. I'd imagine every one of these guys will make much much less on their next contract. |

Re: Jahri Evans Restructures Contract
An expiring contract doesn't hurt. A boat load of backloaded expiring contracts becomes tricky, because once you've deferred a player's salary once, it's difficult to do it again without extending the contract. Which brought about my point of these players not being likely candidates for extensions. Lofton might be, and Hawthorne if he gets healthy and starts to show something, could be a possibility. Obviously you can always tweak contracts a little, but considering how much has already been done, I don't know how much more can be done to make a difference. It will be interesting to say the least.
