The New Orleans Saints have had a busy off-season thus far as they have restructured many contracts and let some players go. There are sure to be more players on the move and one player who could potentially leave the Saints is backup quarterback Chase Daniel.
Daniel has been the number one backup for Drew Brees for the past three seasons and this off-season, he is set to be a free agent. Daniel has said in the past that he would like to compete for a starting job somewhere. He also said this about his place on the roster: “What competition?…I am trying to take Drew Brees’ spot. I don’t see a competition with any other quarterback but Drew on the roster right now.” Daniel is a fierce competitor and he has made it clear that he wants to be the starting quarterback for the Saints. In reality, there is no way he will get a shot to start in New Orleans and certainly not after the Saints gave Brees a $100 million contract last off-season. However, if Brees goes down with an injury for an extended period of time, he would be inserted as the starter. Daniel will be an unrestricted free agent this off-season and while I am sure the Saints would love to re-sign him to be the backup quarterback, there is a chance that he could move on from the team. As far as backup quarterbacks go, he is one of the best in the league and has definitely learned a lot from Brees. There are sure to be some teams interested in acquiring him and giving him a chance to compete for a starting job. Two teams that could potentially be interested in Daniel are the Cleveland Browns and the Arizona Cardinals. It is rumored that the Browns are looking to bring in some competition for Brandon Weeden and could pursue Daniel if the Saints don’t re-sign him. Also, it would make sense for the Cardinals to come after him since they haven’t been able to get much out of Kevin Kolb or John Skelton. However, the Cardinals do have Brandon Hoyer on their roster and many see him getting a shot to win the starting job. If the Cardinals do get Daniel on their roster, it could make for an interesting starting quarterback competition. Daniel is definitely going to be drawing some interest from other teams, but he could very well end up back with the Saints. It is well known that he wants a chance to start but unless Brees suffers a season-ending injury, he will have to wait. Would he be willing to wait around until Brees’ contract is up in 2017? My guess is no, so if he wants a shot at a starting job, this off-season might present the best opportunity to make that happen. It is what it is...
I do hope he gets at least a chance to fight for a starting job if he ends up signing somewhere else. |

Good possibility someone will pick him up dont see the saints matching a good offer and they could address this in the late rounds or possibly a guy that doesn't get signed.

Re: Chase Daniel Drawing Interest from Other Teams
The only one that scares me is that somebody mentioned Carolina.
Can you imagine the ad on Craigslist: "For Sale, one used New Orleans Saints playbook, including QB notes, signals, play sheet and clipboard, bidding price starts at anything over $1 Million dollars. Free holder of field goals included." I don't know -- would Carolina pay $1 Million + more, for a serviceable backup QB who comes with huge insight into Drew Brees and the playbook attached? That's the part that scares me a little. I'D want to buy that if I were them. |

Re: Chase Daniel Drawing Interest from Other Teams
As much as everyone loves Chase, reality check Chase is not a starter in this league, he's a career clipboard holder.
