I don't blame Brees, Flacco, JayZ, Halle Berry, or anyone for wanting to be paid as much as they can!

He fought for a new contract one year ago, and it ended up making him the highest paid player in the league. But that doesn’t mean that Drew Brees doesn’t have sensibilities. The New Orleans quarterback admitted in an interview with WWL radio, that even he really isn’t deserving of all the money that he makes:

“Yes, we probably do,” Brees recently told WWL radio in New Orleans, via the team’s official website. “Unless you’re finding a cure for cancer or creating world peace, I don’t know if anybody deserves to get that much money. That’s the industry that we’re in. You could probably say the same for actors, actresses and entertainers. We’re in the entertainment industry and business is business and there is a market. The market establishes what you get paid.”

And that final sentence is what is important. NFL teams do very well for themselves, and can afford several multi-million contracts, including one like Brees’ and not see it impact their bottom-line. As long as fan interest continues to grow exponentially, so will the these long-term deals. Which is why Brees wasn’t shocked by the new deal for Joe Flacco:

“It doesn’t surprise me that Joe Flacco jumped me,” Brees said. “I’m sure that, maybe it’s Aaron Rodgers, maybe it’s somebody else, is going leap-frog Joe Flacco and the trend is going to continue in that direction as our game continues to grow and the popularity continues to grow. That doesn’t surprise me.”

It seems absurd to some that athletes make the money that they do, but these same people generally are the ones that perpetuate it by purchasing anything NFL-related.

That being said, the only other thing that can curb the rising contracts is a hard cap by the NFL. Teams have several ways of playing around with teh current cap, by restructuring deals, and giving ridiculous signing bonuses that don’t count against the teams cap number. But the NFL will be hard-pressed to ever get that implemented with how popular the sport continues to be. The NFLPA would never agree to a hard cap.
