Backup quarterback ... hear me out
The more I think about it, with the departure of Chase Daniel, we obviously need a backup quarterback. But we are in that awkward phase where Brees will be playing for a while yet and so the Saints don't need to reach for a QB of the future yet.
So maybe we need a stopgap of sorts. It could be too long to groom someone because Brees is not that old and keeps himself in great shape. We need a guy who can do a good job holding kicks and is willing to contribute in smaller ways and is not pining for the starting job. Someone who understands that he probably won't see any action unless a real injury to Brees occurs. We need a guy of high character who is dedicated to his profession and to winning, regardless of his role. Someone who, like Brees, keeps himself in amazing shape because he will do whatever it takes to win. Someone whose grit and passion will mesh with Drew's. We need a guy who has some playing experience and can handle pressure situations. Someone who won't be overwhelmed if he has to come into a game in crunch time if Brees gets roughed up and needs to sit out a series. We need a guy who isn't old and slow. Someone who is mobile and can in practice help our defense prepare for the speedy Cam Newton and RG3 types. We need a guy who doesn't cause drama on Twitter and keeps stuff in the locker room. He won't date Kim Kardashian or other divas from the wrong side of the street. We need a guy who can be embraced by the community and someone who loves the people. Someone who is philanthropic and sees the bigger picture. We need a guy who was done wrong by his previous team, a team that had very little class. Someone with a chip on his shoulder that won't raise a stink about it. Someone who the fans love but no other team seems to want. He won't get paid a lot but will still keep his mouth shut. We need someone with class and honor who won't get in trouble in Big Easy. We need a face that everyone knows and will have a smile and a handshake and sign autographs for the kids for as long as they need him to. We need ... TEBOW! |

Either Matt Ryan or Tony Romo would be great backup QB's for Drew.
But both those guys are still delusional about their careers, so wait another year or 2 and either of them will be available! |

Tebow actually would be a fit. I'm not crazy about him. But when he started in Denver he had a desire to win. He didnt give up against the almighty jets and bears defenses either. We have been an organization of giving second chances...........Shockey(regrettably?), Vilma, Sharper, and Tebow is probably the best FA back up out there right now.

Here is some of my rationale ... the role of the backup QB under a guy like Brees is a different role.
Look at the time Chase Daniel was here. He never started a game. He attempted only 9 passes over 3 years. Brees is sneaky and small and nimble, but deceptively tough and knows his limits. Kind of like John Stockton. Pretty unlikely to get hurt and will definitely play through any minor injuries. When a backup QB comes into a game unexpectedly without a full week of practice reps, we will be very conservative with him and call plenty of running plays, because coming out with all guns blazing with a rusty QB and wideouts on different timing is suicide. This strategy is where Tebow comes in - he leads, he's tough, can run and fall forward when being tackled. With the ultra-conservative game plan, Tebow would be very effective. And with the game on the line, he has a knack for getting it done in an ugly way when the chips are down. This is why I think it would be nice to have Tebow, instead of a guy who everyone thinks is a mini-Drew and is supposed to save our bacon by throwing the ball all over the field. That's a pipe dream. This team is built around Drew and if anything happens to him we morph into a conservative power running team to try to hold down the fort until Drew gets back. |

Actually, I'd like Fitzpatrick, who I think would be really good with our offense, or David Carr. People think I'm crazy when I say Carr, but he has been a solid backup for the Giants.

Tebow is an interesting prospect but I wonder if that would make Coach Payton spend a bunch of time thinking of how to get him snaps.
I would be more interested in Fitzpatrick from the Bills who just got released. He is tough, throws a decent ball and seems to have his head screwed on straight. I also like Vinnie Testaverde, always! ;-) |

The problem with Tebow is he will not accept his role as a backup ... Drew Stanton is the right man for the job & he'll come cheap.

My friend said...Oh, Daniel to KC? You'll get Castle in trade. I was like "DAMN NO WAYZZZ". But the more I think about it, I'd actually be okay with it. He's a solid backup now that I look at it with a new-days-eyeballs.
