We don't know if any of these guys are difference makers or not. It's never a good idea to get too excited about rookies, especially lower round picks and UDFAs. I agree that we should be better than last year (it would be hard not to be) but the thing that gives me the most hope is Rob Ryan. Not that I'm particularly impressed with him. I don't really know much about him. But what I saw last year was a poorly coached and poorly prepared defense. There were previously solid veterans running around in circles looking like they had no idea what they were supposed to be doing. When Jabari Greer looks lost something is definitely not right.

The draft is not always fun. More head-scratchers than not IMO.

Romeus was worth the risk.

I disagree with excitement level of UDFA's simply because of the success this regime has had with them.

So what should give us the most hope other than Ryan? Here's my answer in order of importance:

Payton
Brees
Ryan
Attitude of the team (see chip on shoulder)
Key (re)signings
Health
New blood

Same list as last year. Only real difference between is Payton.

We were excited about our new defensive coordinator last year he was going to make us a modern defense and wasn't going to be so predictable and blitz every play. Brees signed a long term contract. The team had the bountygate chip, they were mad as hell. They were going to prove to the world that they didn't need bounties. We had just stolen one of Atlanta's best defensive players who was going to fill the void left by Vilma (take that goodell, we said)

There was even a heated argument on here that lasted several days because Boutte said the Saints would go 11-5 or 10-6 and this was AFTER the bounty gate penalties and that wasn't good enough for some fans.

11-5 not good enough!! Remember that?

Some guys are optimistic, some are pessimistic, both groups think they're realists. We won't know who's right till the season starts.

But I do this for fun, so I'll choose to be optimistic. I'll wear the black and gold glasses.
