Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
NOLA asked this question but didn't put it in a poll format.
The players are from their list; I added Craig Heyward. ********************************************************* Running back Chuck Muncie had a ground-breaking career for the New Orleans Saints but where does he rank among the franchise's running backs? Who do believe was the best Saints running back? Chuck Muncie Deuce McAllister George Rogers Dalton Hilliard Rueben Mayes Reggie Bush Pierre Thomas Ricky Williams Wayne Wilson |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
I voted McAllister
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
I vote for Deuce
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Can't comment on guys I've never seen play. Got to go with Deuce here.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Reuben Mayes' career ended WAYYYYYY too short. Can't vote him #1 because his short career doesn't put him in the "history" category.
It was between Deuce and Dalton Hilliard. But Deuce was a workhorse through some pretty lean years with the team. We had a consistent back and running game, and he was pure athlete. |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Deuce is #1 for me. Loved his heart.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Love Deuce, but, there was a time when Dalton Hilliard WAS the Saints offense.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
I think I will follow the pack, Deuce will Hilliard on his ass
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Deuuuuuuuuuuuuuce!
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Sproles. He is the best. He can do everything.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
cant forget Hokie Gajan.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Sproles has broken more NLF and team records than any of them.

Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Deuce and Dalton are 1A and 1B
TBH; one reminds me of the other. Dalton is still my all-time favorite Saint. Like it was stated prior; sometimes he was the only offense the Saints had. Some darn good names on that list. And totally agree with HALO about Mayes. |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Yall might laugh but I use to tear people up in madden with Mr Mario Bates.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Rogers still holds the Saints single season rushing record with 1674 and tied with Deuce and Hilliard with 13 TDs
He also ave nearly 200 yards per season more than Deuce... Its so close I can only go with the numbers. Rogers |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
I love them all. They all were the best when they were there. The backfield of Muncie and Galbreath was amazing. 1a. Rogers, 1b. Deuce, 1c. Muncie, 1d. Hiliard. Everyone else is honorable mention.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
I voted Deuce but I would put Pierre right behind him.
BTW, why isn't Bill Butler (#38) up there? haha j/k Any of you old-timers remember him? |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
What, no Gil Fennerty?
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
If you have Wayne Wilson, you may as well have put Hokie Gajan (who led the NFL one year with a 5.1 ypc avg.). To me, it's Deuce! :bng: |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Deuce is running away with it...............again! Ha!
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
What a fantastic set of names. Brings back the memories.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
it was between muncie and deuce to me and i choose muncie, as a lot of u remember when bush was a shot in the arm for the franchise and community the muncie draft was awesome to the few that remember, he gave us a feeling of this is it we will finally have a winning season. which of coarse didn't happen. but he was an sight to watch him plow over people. and the only back i remember with the saints to get around a corner and he left people and good defences in there tracks. deuce was aplow also but nowhere near the speed he had. and if it wasn't for his powder addiction he may have made it as our first to HOFer. imo. he was a favorite of mine at the time. and wnen they traded him away during the season was shocking to us all.

Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
The "other" 38 TD Tony Baker and 48 Andy Livingston. The first Thunder and LIghtning!
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
What! No "Gil The Thrill?", Tom Barrington, Curt Watson, Don McCall, Elija Pitts, Howard Stevens and last but not least Joe Don Looney!!
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Reuben Mayes would have been second only to Muncie talent wise. Watching him turn the corner was thing of beauty.
I voted Deuce. (The two best RBs to ever wear a Saints uniform were Jimmy Taylor and Earl Campbell. Both were over the hill by the time they got here though. ) |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Quote:
He had subpar QB, WR, TE & a good O line. He really moved that offense :bng: |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Dalton Hillard. He could cut on a dime and give you change for a quarter.
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
Reuben Mayes predicting the Saints will go to the Superbowl (2009).
Now ya'll forgot Hokie Gajan on that list? Hokie played a season and was leading rusher until he had a brutal leg injury that cut his pro career super short. |
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
The Superdome announcer would say "DAL-ton Hill-IARD"!
|
Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
I love that Dalton is second.... BUT....
Pierre Thomas has the ring to prove it. Just sayin.... I voted for Hillard. The dude was a load. |

Re: Ranking the all-time best running back greats in New Orleans Saints history
I think if PT was given the chance to be a feature back, he would suprise some people, his incredible balance on the field is what gets me shouting during the games
Got to be Deuce though, he carried the team for so many years, then tore his ACL in 2005 and came back and ripped off another 1k rushing season in 2006 The eagles game comes to mind when i think of deuce, bowling over the eagles safety and then stiff arming brian dawkins for another 10 yards, he was special |
