Ambrose making do with technique

Saints cornerback Ashley Ambrose might have lost a step or two, but the NFL doesn't appear to be gaining on him.

Not based on the first three games of his 13th season anyway.

Ambrose is coming off a team-high nine-tackle performance against the wide receiver-rich St. Louis Rams. He also recovered a fumble and broke up two passes.

Not bad for the old man of the 'D.'

In fact, Ambrose is the oldest full-time starting cornerback in the NFL at age 34. There are older corners. Deion Sanders is 37, and Aeneas Williams, like Ambrose a product of Fortier, is 36. But neither plays the position on a full-time basis.

Ambrose is tied for second in the NFL with two interceptions, his 40th and 41st.

Ambrose making do with technique

Saintfan, I\'ve made no secret about the fact that I like Ambrose, but I have to say he is getting a bit molested out there.

The reason he had so many tackles this week is because his guy was catching the ball a lot. Granted, he made the tackle.

However, technique can only get you so far - and apparently it is far enough to make the tackle still. I think he is still an asset against the running game too, but in pass protection he\'s starting to look slow.

I agree. He was going up against one of the best in the league and got used more or less. He has to give too much ground cause he can\'t make it up anymore. Why couldn\'t Craver have his desire?

Ambrose making do with technique

Seeing Ambrose around plays always shocks me. I truly think he is an average nickel player at best. Why coaches call plays that have their WRs running 10 yard outs when he starts 7-8 yards deep is beyond me. Take whoever Ambrose lines up against and run him straight across the middle. Ambrose would be 5 yards behind the guy before he got half way across the field.
