Brees/Payton era of breaking the rules

We have all heard the age old adages below that came from a different NFL. We have broken them all so far and its time to recognize that your daddy's NFL is not the same game today, and we do not have to have a tall QB with a great ground game and a top defense to win convincingly.

Drew has only a 20% chance of ever playing again - How did that work out.
QBs need to be tall - Drew is 6"
Defenses Win Championships - Super Bowl 44 we were ranked 25th
A running game is a must - 4-0 we have no ground game this season.
Marino's season passing record will never be broken - Its broken.
The Aints will never win a Super Bowl -

We have done all of this with a lot of no name players (at the time they were picked up).

It is time to become comfortable with our lack of a rushing game, and understand that Drew is not throwing his arm out. By all means it could be better, but it is not a requirement.

We are fine and have done more with less on both sides of the ball.

Dammit Oak! What are you trying to do. Goodell sees all these rules we've broken, he'll suspend the whole team.

Re: Brees/Payton era of breaking the rules

Unitas' record of consecutive games with a TD wasn't supposed to ever fall. And Drew is breaking so many records that he's breaking or matching his own records.

Who dat?

Re: Brees/Payton era of breaking the rules

Running game looks bad on the stat sheet, but if they can run the ball 20-25 times a game between the tackles and keep throwing those little flare passes that function as extended handoffs then the offense will maintain some balance.

I still don't like the ZBS for this team. There was no reason to change anything and it's obvious that DLP and Grubbs especially are struggling with those concepts. Bye week might be a good time to re-evaluate what they are trying to do there.

Re: Brees/Payton era of breaking the rules

Historically, a good running game allows you to control the clock. By grinding things out you keep the ball away from the other team.

2013 Saints:
Rushing: 81.3 yds per game, ranked 25th.
Time of Possession: 34.17 minutes per game, ranked 2nd.

So, Payton/Brees run a ball control passing attack that only turns to the run at the end of the game when we have a lead and the D is gassed.

Add Johnny U's streak to that list, and I think we are good.

Speaking of the lack of run game, it is nothing new that the Saints use the short pass instead of the running game. I had many a discussion about that when Reggie was here: people going off on Reggie not being a RB, to which I responded "right".I did a bit of research, and it turned out that the majority of Bush's catches happened behind the LoS.
