Re: Ray Lewis willing to help Ahmad Brooks fine for his hit on Drew Brees
It was a classic clothesline tackle, which has been illegal since the day of Dick "Night Train" Lane. A player named Don Pellington for the Colts, once wrapped his arm in a plaster cast, with a steel rod in it, then put bandage padding over it so the refs couldn't see, and knocked a player unconscious by clotheslining him with it at a game in 1959. It's not like the refs are suddenly changing the rules or changing the way the game is played, this particular types of hit has been illegal for decades. That's right, decades.

Re: Ray Lewis willing to help Ahmad Brooks fine for his hit on Drew Brees
Not a clothes line at all. Just because his arm is out doesn't mean its a clothes line. It was a putting your arm out to make a grab. Typically a clothes line also has the ball carrier running Drew was standing still. I don't have a problem with the penalty its a close call but the rules are the rules.
I do not agree that a fine should be apart of the penalty. It did not have malicious intent nor horrible enough to warrant a fine. |

Re: Ray Lewis willing to help Ahmad Brooks fine for his hit on Drew Brees
"What happened to the suit, Ray? What happened to the suit?" ... Lewis is a boob and another example of 'just because you were a good player, doesn't mean you'll be a good coach/have a future after the game" ... the only incite he has that I'd be interested in concerns that night it Atlanta, 12/13yrs ago.
That hit's a fine all-day, every-day in today's NFL. Sure, maybe it wasn't 10yrs ago, but that was then, this is now. If they don't fine him, every other player that has been fined this season should file a class-action suit vs the NFL, just sayin'. |

Re: Ray Lewis willing to help Ahmad Brooks fine for his hit on Drew Brees
that was a bad hit on brees. even though it was close to the neck with the close line look , it was the finish that was a no-brainer for ref's. the slam to the lower part of his neck/higher part of the pads. naturally the arm will move upward to the jaw of brees that sent the helmet rising signaling the zebra to reach automaticly for the yellowish rag they call . THE FLAG. it was a great call. it had to be damn-it. look at some of the BS calls with a finger brushing against the face mast they call, it was the right call, i'm done.

I don't really fault Ray for his statement. He's a defensive guy so when something is not blatantly an illegal hit, he's going to support the defensive guy. Plus, brooks doesn't have a history of dirty hits.

The reason for that is he's not just an analyst. He's a "color" analyst meaning he is there to entertain as well as breakdown the game he played. ESPN fully understood they were getting a passionate and emotional personality when they hired Ray so you can't expect him not to be that now just because he's on the air in a suit. It's the same reason Michael Strahan, Shannon Sharpe, Deon Sanders, Michael Irvin, Charles Barkley and Shaq have jobs. They are not just there to inform you but inform you and entertain you. So in that regard, they are part of the news. |
