I think the best way to describe him is he has issues with the bull rush and after starting for so long he is still having issue with picking up stunts.

he is the best serviceable OC in the NFL IMO but teams have him scouted and he has yet to improve those area of his game they are attacking. at this point i have to start saying he can not handle the adjustment. he is not the quickest adjusting cat in the phone booth.

the kid has talent but does he have enough? This is the question i have to ask at this point.

Drew need a deep pocket to step up into.

I'm reading and agreeing with most, but at what point do we start talking qb. Brees good for maybe 3 more years. Or are we content with McCown

Drew easily has 5 years left, if not more. I've never seen a QB take more than 3 years to develop. Most develop in one or two.

It becomes an issue in 2017, not 2014.

Early picks at the corner position have not been kind to the saints. OT in first round and find a corner in free agency

Drew has maybe one good year after this year...

I've not liked his inability to connect with receivers in stride on the long passes the past two-three years; he does have a reconstructed shoulder...

And while the pass protection is shared between Drew AND the Offensive Line, he's had that scared deer-in-the-headlights looks lately (Think Rocky III)...

Also, his reluctance to pull the ball down and run for ~8 yd slides, instead forcing attempts/interceptions is becoming a bad habit to his game and probably another indicator of guy thinking about how much he has to lose...

I'd like to see how Griffin progresses through training camp next season; but after watching him at the Texas vs The World College Senior Bowl - there's definitely something there, but is is enough?!?

The Bill Walsh 49ers showed you don't wait till the quarterback falters, it throws the entire offense's timing out - and timing is everything as we've witnessed these past few years since Coach Payton arrived...

If there's a guy, whether FA, Rookie FA, or draft pick there, you always acquire the talent and deal with those problems rather than the problem of not having the talent...

Now, I've watched everyone of his snaps since he's been a Saint; his experience, tenacity and intelligence have hid the decline in his physical talent - but the day is coming when he'll be unable to zip the ball in and move in the pocket quickly...

I've watched this game for nearly forty years; he's got one good elite year left and this team needs him at an elite level to win the Big Tamale...

But I gotta tell you, your response cracked me up...thanks for making my day

There's no kool-aid drinking here. A perennial top 5 quarterback just isn't going to fall off the face here. The tenacity, intelligence, and experience that you're talking about is exactly what that's going to keep him playing at a high enough level that we're going to need him... despite his diminishing physical attributes as he ages. Look at what Peyton continues to do.

You said he "maybe" has one more good year in him. We're talking about Drew friggin' Brees.

papz 11-30-2013 10:01 AM

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

With that said and getting back on topic, I would love to get my hands on Aaron Murray. His injury and "height" should cause him to drop into the mid rounds. He has a lot of Brees in him and I think Payton could do wonders with him.

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

Not bad, but Jimmy Garoppolo of Eastern Illinois could also be a quality find...

But don't discount Griffin - there's a reason why Payton blocked the Rams from getting him...

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

For me the number 1 WR in this draft and none of the so called experts are talking about is Kelvin Benjamin from Florida St. He reminds me of a bigger version of Julio Jones. Id love to see him in Black and Gold!

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

Corner is my priority and I realize that we haven't had any success with 1st round draft picks at corner. But we have no depth and with Greer down and most likely out that scares the hell out of me. P Rob is still an unknown. I know that he looked better, but has he shown enough to spend another dime on him? I don't think so. White is just a penalty waiting to happen. Carr is a back up corner at best. If we have another corner go down we could be in big trouble.

Center is my next upgrade. When Nicks left dlp was exposed as being serviceable but not much more than that. He does not allow Drew to step up in the pocket quite often. He doesn't handle the bull rush well and gets beat way too often.

I think that we will be good at tackle when Armstead works his way into the line up. Strief has been surprisingly good so I feel good about the tackles.

The guards are strong enough to stay with what we've got. Lelito looked better last game and can fill in nicely.

Safety needs to be addressed in the draft......if the right player is there after we've filled our needs. Jenkins has improved but I am not willing to sign him to a long term contract. His past performances can't be ignored.

I am slightly concerned about our WR's. Morgan and Toon are injured again. Meachem most likely won't be back. Kenny Stills can catch but doesn't go after the ball. We look a little thin now.

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

I think De la Puente is good if you give him a little space to accelerate, I think the Saints are trying to develop ways to move the ball in accordance with the O-Line, and it's working. Ingram and Thomas have looked a lot better since the Cowboys game.

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

There is a difference between under-thrown and thrown under.

When our receivers are double covered with a man on top and bottom the safest throw is one thrown under since our receiver is the only one that knows where the stop and turn point is.

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

After 12 games I'd say we need to look at some LB's with speed, and both front lines.

Lofton just looks slow now. Parys Haralson was simply a stop gap.

Our O-line is out of sync and could probably use a nasty LT and a smashmouth OC. An OG to push Evans and Grubbs wouldn't hurt either.

Add some depth at CB and we'll be just fine.

jeanpierre 12-03-2013 08:26 AM

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

We need to draft younger, faster, stronger physical players...

We must be able to bust opposing teams in the mouth, not this finesse crap...

I'm gonna say it...

Unless its renegotiated - the Drew Brees contract is strangling this team...

And his is not the only one...

Brees is playing like a scared Rocky III; Russell Wilson wasn't that great last night - but he had that hunger in his eyes...

Drew's eyes?!? had that "I just gotta hold on and finish this contract" look...

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

Have to agree with JeanPierre. Everytime we pay someone they sit back and lay eggs example Moore. We are going to have a hard time getting the supporting cast without Brees doing something with his contract. They all want the huge dollars so they play all out for a season or two and ride off in the sunset at the same time their laying on the teams leg.

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

What about a running back in the second round, a fresh set of legs. Let Mark Ingram fly away and draft a Pounder. There was success in 2nd round running backs in 2013 (see Eddy Lacy, Le'veon Bell, Monte Ball, and Giovanni Bernard) and Thomas is no longer a stable 20+ carry running back. I also fancy a Kick returner like Corrdarell Patterson and Tavon Austin, someone who can get the yards every time because it seems like sproles has lost it.

I've been thinking for sometimes we need a smash mouth running back that can soften the D up and wear them down. A smash mouth tandam would be nice. When FB Collins run on Seattle the other night right there told me something, we need a punisher.

Re: What position would you like to see the Saints go for in the draft?

Because of the injuries I would have to say CB. Oline is another big concern but SP seems to find gems in rounds 3-7. As for a pounding RB Hillard from LSU will be there late. We had good luck with his uncle!

Lets not forget Terron Armstead will be like a draft pick this year. Id like to see the best defensive player in the first round and possibly in the 2nd round.

1. O-line
2. I'm torn between a LB or DB
3. Whichever we don't choose from pick 2
4. O-line

I agree with we need a smashmouth type of player(s)

Now if you are going to go that route look for a very polished back. i am not going into ingram. trade keep not the topic

round 2

Charles Sims RB West Virgina
5116 213 4.54/4.44

Most versatile RB in the college? A nightmare to defend?
Smooth, fluid runner on the edges, size and strength run effectively between the tackles. Big plus superb receiving skills

Could be SP dream at the next level.

His blocking skill are solid but do need work.

trade back? pick Charles and then trade Ingram? what a can worms lol

If he comes out i like Ty Montgomery. big strong good speed and very very quick. he would plug right into to the saints WR also. Stanford should be an indicator of his ability to pick up on the play book. you might assume.

Ty Montgomery WR/KR Stanford
6015 215 4.52/4.42

Sure handed, extremely quick, good top end speed and the best part is he built to take on tacklers.

I want speed and agression. I don't care what position, just a nasty smashmouth badass on either side of the line.

Vaccaro was a great start, now lets grab a LB version of him.

how about

ROUND 2 ALSO

Telvin Smith OLB/ILB Florida ST
6022 218 4.60/4.50
He is a wild man that makes up for size with attitude. HE IS AN ANGRY SAFETY PLAYING lb

218? Kind of small for a LB in the NFL? Can't be an every down back at that size...

A big, nasty ILB is what I want on the D, a rush ILB so to speak with cover skills. And a safety!!
