It was a HUGE deal for a long time. But it seemed to me others contested the kick as "tied" or already beaten by other distance "excuses" and explanations. Also, after the Superbowl, lots of things hit the rear view mirror and this was one of them. They used to replay the kick on the anniversary of it every year on local TV, but stopped doing that years ago.

That said, Dempsey held the record forever. It was already broken in preseason, and it was tied. Second time Denver tied or claimed to beat the record. We got in a big forum argument when I think Janikowski or someone else claimed they really had the record in the NFL a few years back. I don't know why the damn thing gets so controversial.

Oh yeah, I read someone claimed it was broken in like 1932, but they didn't have exact measurements back then. Again, seems like people contested it around the NFL when it was brought up.

The record moved on. Besides, so many people aren't old enough to know or remember. I was not there, because I was born not much before it happened. I started making my appearance in Tulane stadium before it closed, and was in the dome for the first game there. By that time, it was legend. It was a great record, great history. Like someone said, they already have asterisks in front of the new record because of altitude. Seems to me some contested Dempsey before Prater came along.

Well we won a super bowl before that record was broken.. so I'm not complaining.

i was in the stands for "The Kick" that was my first and most exciting moment ever at a game. it deserves a big * next to it. big difference in kicking locations and rule changes. but all records fall and the leagues make no effort to educate fans as to the differences in the records. shame.

can anyone remember they argued putting an asterick on Tom Demseys record. Because of his handicap. it was news for awhile ,until it blew over or disallowed. its going to hold up and will be broken again and again. the mile high affect and the wind will blow one day for someone that will get a 70 or so yarder.

For a long time, the story behind the kick was Dempsey had a clubbed foot and had his shoe specially made for him.

Seems like any team we played had a comment about that record, especially the Cowgirls when they were good during the Landry years. When you successfully defended the record, all they would do is turn and laugh at you because your team never went to a playoff or had a single winning season or even sniffed a Superbowl. It was like ancient troll fest from their fans.

They were right. All that is in our rear view mirror. For me, as a long time fan, the Superbowl changed everything about the organization. The current regime of Sean Payton and Brees have shattered so many records that they eclipse the past.

What's to get upset over a 64 yd FG? It was going to happen sooner or later. Big Ben broke Terry Bradshaw's TD record too. Oh yeah, that doesn't count cause it was a 3 yd pass and in the snow.
