Brees' contract wasn't the problem. Too much money tied up in Smith, Vilma and Harper was the problem.

Without those 3 big contracts we probably keep Nicks, or likely franchised him.

Brees is the 4th highest paid QB, which is just about where he should be.

Here's where we screwed up...

Some are still good players, but overpaid in my opinion.
Smith 13.9 million
Evans 11 million
Grubbs 9.1 million
Bunkley 6.1 million
Greer 5.8 million
Harper 5.8 million
Lofton 5.2 million
Moore 5 million
Sproles 4.5 million

i not saying it was but the planning was. like you pointed out veteran contracts were killers and will be still. youth needed to deal with the cap issues is mighty thin. thats my point

the over all picture was and still is a mess. we need another year before i can see thing working out cap wise.

I think there's an NFL rule about restructuring too many times. I've heard several people say that the following year (2015) is the year he restructures.

Yes, every aspect of the offense has sucked badly for the past several weeks. And in the earlier losses it was the offense that let us down also. Even in the loss to Seattle giving up as many points has we did, the offense showed up on only one possession. But to try to put the blame on Brees' contract is a bit of a reach to me. Ok, yeah it may have prevented us from signing "big time" OL free agents, etc, but guess what? If you are an OL, I need you to do OL sh*t. If you are an LB I need you to do LB sh*t! If you are a WR I need you to do WR sh*t! They are all professionals, and you may not be the best in the business but gosh dang it act like you know the business. DO SOMETHING!!!!
